The Beat Hotel: Ginsberg, Burroughs & Corso in Paris, 1957-1963, by Barry Miles

The Beat Hotel is a delightful chronicle of a remarkable moment in American literary history. From the Howl obscenity trial to the invention of the cut-up technique, Barry Miles's extraordinary narrative chronicles the feast of ideas that was Paris, where the Beats took awestruck audiences with Duchamp and Celine, and where some of their most important work came to fruition--Ginsberg's "Kaddish" and "To Aunt Rose"; Corso's The Happy Birthday of Death; and Burroughs's Naked Lunch. Based on firsthand accounts from diaries, letters, and many original interviews, The Beat Hotel is an intimate look at an era of spirit, dreams, and genius.

From Publishers Weekly
Miles (Jack Kerouac: King of the Beats, etc.), who has been intimately involved in the documentation of the Beat scene, focuses here on an international aspect of Beat work: Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Gregory Corso's escape from "the conformism and Puritanism of fifties America" during the six years (1957-1963) they lived at a cheap hotel on Paris's Left Bank. During this period, the three pursued such now-famous creative endeavors as "Kaddish," Naked Lunch and "Bomb." Their important work during this time, particularly the "cut-up" method pioneered by Burroughs, had an important formative influence on the next generation of artists, according to Miles. Part scholarly study and part gossip-fest, this account traces the aesthetic, sexual and social goings-on in Paris: "Within the shelter of the Beat Hotel," Miles writes, "they had mapped out many of the paths that the 'sixties generation' was to actually follow: the recreational use of drugs and experiments with psychedelics..., investigations into magic and mysticism..., gay rights and sexual freedom , the legalization of 'pornography' and challenges to obscenity laws." The hotel on rue Git-le-Coeur, closed for nearly four decades now, still symbolizes the fruitful ground of collaborative creation among the Beats. The significance of this period in Paris for the Beats may be slightly exaggerated by Miles to justify this book-length study, but those interested in the lives of these cult figures will most likely forgive such overdetermination in the interests of learning in an entertaining narrative about important writers now considered American literary heroes. From Library Journal
The cheap rooming house at nine rue Git-Le-Coeur became known as the Beat Hotel after several Beat writers made it their home in Paris. In this interesting blend of sexual gossip and literary scholarship, Miles, author of full-length biographies of Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac, paints a vivid picture of literary life along the Left Bank in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He recounts not only the Beat writers' creative interactions with one other but their relations with such Frenchmen as Maurice Girodias, publisher of the Olympia Press, and Henri Michaux, an author who shared their fascination with the use of drugs to heighten consciousness. Miles also documents the influences of a number of European writers on the Beats, including Andr Breton, Louis-Ferdinand C line, and Sergei Esenin. Finally, he is particularly good at exploring the collaboration between Brion Gysin and Burroughs that led to their famous cut-up method. This is fun reading, especially for those steeped in the Beats. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

A long letter from an honest "fan", Barry Miles.
By S. Curtis
At first I thought that this book would be just that...a love letter, and along one, from an affected fan, considering how much of an insider Barry Miles was with the beats. it is all that, to some degree, but it is also an extensive and accurate review of the time surrounding a very important and often overlooked period of international social development that cannot be left out of the cannon of history for its significance in who we are today socially, morally, philosophically, and even religiously. While many would regard these beat figures with a distrusting eye, for many good reasons, this text is also insightful into the "why" the times developed the way they were. The disaffected generation had it's roots, and most of them...in Paris...where here. After all, experimentation requires a Petri dish to see how something grows outside of its normal environment. The kinds of experimentation that took place in the late 50s and early 60s could not have been staged in America.

I don't like this book for the same reason that the author likes it himself. I simply like it because it is well-written and detailed....and...well, honest.

One-star hotel -- five-star book!
By Patrick W. Crabtree
The goings on in this decrepit old Paris Hotel, run by an old French lady who cooked Cassoulets for the guests, were astounding. A gathering point for starving artists, especially planetary beatniks, we discover that the unbridled use of hard drugs and graphic homosexuality were a lot more common than Eisenhower would have let us in America think! *.*

This book is a hoot but I want to say up front that it was seriously well-researched by the author. It's predominantly about some well-known, perhaps infamous, American Beats, most of whom (in this hotel anyway) were bisexual drug users. There were also other 'artists' from various places in the world who either lived in The Beat Hotel (the hotel really didn't even have an official name), or they 'visited' as guests of residents for varying lengths of time.

The peccadillos of these characters defy sanity. There's scrying, crying, heroin use, singing, pornography generation, speculating on psychedelic inventions, poetry readings, and tons of all manner of sex.

William Burroughs seems to be the main guy in this life adventure -- we hear of the untimely death of his wife (at another location) as Burroughs was smashed, playing "William Tell" with her for the entertainment of the equally drunken and high guests, ultimately putting a bullet in her forehead. He was never arrested for this incident.

The chief guy whom we expect to find lodged firmly in The Beat Hotel never made it: Jack Kerouac. But pretty much every one of his dubious associates made at least a visit.

This book is well-written -- a real page-turner and quite hilarious. It matters not if the reader is gay, straight, or anywhere in-between sexually... you'll much enjoy this book. And, if ever there was a clear example of 'truth being stranger than fiction', this one is it.

From Publishers Weekly
This sumptuous anthology gathers into its generous embrace a rich mix of cultural heritages, from Native American and African American to Hispanic, Pennsylvania Dutch, Cajun, Jewish, Shaker, Scandinavian and others. The resulting medley of folk songs, folklore, prose and poetry is as lovely as an Appalachian patchwork quilt, with each piece a unique but integral part of the whole. Each of 15 Caldecott artists--including Chris Van Allsburg, Barbara Cooney, Donald Crews, Molly Bang and Ed Young--provides stylish illustrations for an entire unit of the book, which is divided chronologically and thematically. Creation stories, pourquoi tales and a Navajo song conjure up America "In the Beginning" (Leo and Diane Dillon illustrate this section); the American revolution, the immigrant experience, slavery, westward expansion, tall tales, ghost stories and baseball all receive their due. The final section, "In Our Time," features numerous 20th-century landmarks (including Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech) as well as folklore from such latter-day immigrant cultures as Vietnamese, Haitian and Cuban. What better way for children to get acquainted with their country's wealth of diversity than through an all-star collaboration like this? All ages.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
A swell compilation (almost as good as the 150,000 first printing, BOMC choice, etc., suggests) of ``the heart and soul of America's story''--folk tales and songs from major ethnic groups, historical vignettes, and more, all arranged in 15 topical sections (with eight to ten entries each) on historical periods, typical genres (tricksters; nonsense; animal stories), and such quintessentially American topics as railroads, tall-tale heroes, and baseball (including Abbott and Costello's ``Who's on First?''--one of several entries not easily available elsewhere). Cohn's selections are informed by conscience as well as diversity (the ten pieces in the section entitled ``Let My People Go'' all represent African-American points of view); her range, representation, and ear for cadence, humor, and appeal are admirable. The best entries are well-honed songs and stories left in the form in which they earned their popularity; the abridgments, retellings, and historical summaries don't have the same energy, but do help tie it all together and make a vehicle for the art that comprises nearly half of this generously huge book. The 14 blue-ribbon artists, most of them Caldecott medalists, aren't always at their best here, nor do they always work in their trademark styles and media (Van Allsburg's humorous ``Frozen Logger'' is in intricate pen and ink), but there's a wealth of splendid images (Ed Young's concluding ``Earth/always/endures''--Native American), and some intriguing matches (Trina Schart Hyman illustrating a Julius Lester tale originally visualized by fellow contributor Jerry Pinkney). Introductory comments for each entry plus interesting endnotes (including ``Read More About It'' sections) and more specific acknowledgements yield a lot (but not always the actual sources for the retold stories, and it's cumbersome to search all three). A treasure-trove for browsing, enlivening the curriculum, reading aloud, devouring whole, or returning to nibble again and again. ``Suggestions for Further Reading''; subject guide; chronology; index. LOVE this book. Nostalgia at its finest.
By Danielle Garcia
This book is one of the best books I've ever had the pleasure of cracking the spine for. I had it when I was a kid and I spent a lot of time searching for it before i realized that I should probably just check Amazon. Paid 2$ for a like new hardcover copy! Can't beat that. This book is full of folk tales, old songs and regional stories from all over the world. Beautiful illustrations accompany each page and the stories are strange and intriguing enough even for an adult.

wonderful resource for home and classroom educators
By A Customer
A beautiful book with a terrific variety of offerings. I homeschool and have used this book repeatedly through the years with a 10 year old and now a 5 year old. This book gives an excellent foundation for each of the subjects covered in its separate chapter. There are stories, poems, brief non-fiction pieces, and songs that include simple but nicely creative piano accompaniment. You'll find everything from scary southern folk tales to "Who's on First" to a brief, accessible and sad report of Isabel's "cleansing" of Spain. The writers and artists are incredibly diverse, and include Norman Finkelstein, Longfellow, and Leo and Diane Dillon. The fact that the above and many others can seamlessly exist is a wonderful testament to the talents of the editors, Cohn and Bang. Perhaps they could compile an equally terrific anthology of world lit for kids; I'd snap it up. My kids love it and will gladly pick it up on their own to pore over the beautiful artwork.

From Sea to Shining Sea
By Theatre Kidd
This book is a treasury of poems, songs, and stories, from the great country of the US :) The songs are traditional, and, if you have a little skill in piano, flute, recorder, or mallet percussion, you can play them with ease.
The poems are okay, and they include Paul Revere's Ride, which is wonderful.
The stories are also interesting, and they probably aren't ones that you've ever heard before; all of them are 'G' rated, except for one that might be a little scary for little kids in the first section about a girl whose fingers were smashed off by her father and brothers (gross).
This book is okay, but it isn't the greatest thing out there.

Black Holes Are Souls (The God Series Book 23), by Mike Hockney

Any theory – any theory at all – that begins with false assumptions will produce false results. Therefore, the most fundamental task of all is to examine and get right the assumptions that underlie a theory. How do science’s fundamental assumptions stand up to scrutiny? Science falls apart at a particular aspect of existence that can be defined exactly – at singularities. The whole logic of science collapses when singularities are encountered. This is fantastically problematic for science given that black holes are centred on singularities, photons are singularities, and the whole of the Big Bang Universe came from a Singularity.

What, ontologically, are singularities? Descartes gave us the answer hundreds of years ago. Singularities are minds, and from that single fact, science is turned on its head. Mind does not come from matter; matter comes from mind.

Black Holes, White Holes, and Worm Holes, Oh My!
By Brad Gumm
Is there any inquisitive person alive on this planet who hasn’t been fascinated by the idea of black holes? What person hasn’t read a science book, watched a science documentary, and/or watched a science fiction movie about these strange enigmas called black holes? But what, exactly, are black holes?

When we study the various guesses that scientific materialism has made concerning the ontology of black holes, we quickly come to the realization that science, as usual, doesn’t have a clue. Indeed, many scientific materialists don’t even think that black holes exist. Here is a quick article from phys.org that highlights scientific materialism’s disjointed thinking about black holes: (...) . If you take a look at this article, you quickly realize that black holes confuse and bewilder scientists to no end. There is a very simple reason for this confusion, namely, black holes are minds and scientific materialists, by definition, can not fathom or accept the independent existence of mind and, because of this instinctual hostility towards mind, they have absolutely no way of truly studying black holes.

There is, however, a secret society that has existed for millennia whose purpose has been the rational, mathematical study of souls/minds/black holes. This secret society is known to us today as the Pythagorean Illuminati. If you would like to learn the Truth of your mind/soul, and hence the Truth of existence, then you should read this book, “Black Holes are Souls”, and all of the other titles released by the preeminent authors: Mike Hockney, Michael Faust, and Adam Weishaupt. All of the books written by these three meritocratic heroes are available on Amazon.

If you are unfamiliar with the work of the Pythagorean Illuminati, I wouldn’t recommend beginning your studies in Pythagoreanism/Ontological Mathematics with this book – “Black Holes are Souls”. You see, the authors of these books are laying out the foundation for a whole New World based on Hyperreason. This means a new government, a new economics, a new religion, a new society, a new science, a new psychology, a new sociology, a new education, a new EVERYTHING. If you want to gain the best possible understanding of this Rational New World Order and be a part of the vanguard ushering it in, then you must read all of the Pythagorean Illuminati’s books. These books are the purest expression of Reason this world has ever seen. As I said, every one of the Illuminati’s books are available on Amazon, and they’re practically free.

For people new to these books, I would recommend beginning with the various book series by Adam Weishaupt and Michael Faust. It’s these series that lay the foundation of Pythagorean Illuminism and prepare your mind for what you will discover in the Illuminati’s most advanced books series: “The God Series”, by Mike Hockney. “Black Holes are Souls” is the 23rd installment in “The God Series”. So, you can probably imagine that if you begin your studies with this book, you will have missed a lot of prior information to say the least. These are simply my opinions though, the important thing is for all rational people to begin their studies in Pythagoreanism/Ontological Mathematics as soon as possible. Once all of the people of Reason unite under the banner of the Pythagorean Illuminati, there will be no stopping the advent of The New World Order and The Age of Reason.

If you’ve been reading and integrating all of the Illuminati’s books up to this point, then you will be very excited about and right at home with this particular book. As I mentioned above, this is the 23 title in the reality revealing series known as “The God Series”. This book continues building off of the information presented in the previous books in this series, especially book number 21 of “The God Series” – “Causation and the Principal of Sufficient Reason”.

In “Black Holes are Souls”, we learn the truth concerning black holes, white holes, wormholes, hyperspace, and The Big Bang. The Illuminati have taught us about black holes in many of their previous books, but never to the extent that this book delves into the subject. In this book, the Pythagorean Illuminati rationally deconstruct and destroy all of scientific materialism’s “theories” pertaining to black holes, and they then present us with the Ontological Mathematical Truth of black holes, namely, they’re minds/souls. As always, the Illuminati rationally, rigorously, definitively and mathematically prove all of their points, and a rational person will be left with no doubt about the conclusions of the authors.

Everything you love about “The God Series” continues in “Black Holes are Souls”. The authors write chapters on: Ontological Mathematics, philosophy, psychology, science, eastern religion, abrahamic religion, new ageism, politics, activism, Meritocracy, reason, and everything in between.

There are some absolutely fascinating sections in this book concerning psychology and the conscious mind versus the unconscious mind. Reading any of the books by the Pythagorean Illuminati will cause changes to begin taking place within your mind, and, if you have no understanding of mathematics and psychology, these changes will be extremely disconcerting. Luckily, these authors give us ample mathematical and psychological knowledge to understand the changes that are occurring in our minds. The sections on the feedback loop between our conscious and unconscious minds helped my own understanding in just this way.

I think it’s always important to remember that the Illuminati are writing these books to change the world, not to make money (hence why their books are so inexpensive). If you truly want to repay these authors for, quite literally, saving your soul, then begin thinking of ways that you can help them change the world.

One way to help them change the world is to begin spreading the Rational, Positive Liberty message of the Pythagorean Illuminati far and wide. Rational people all over the world MUST be made aware of the principles and virtues of Pythagoreanism if this world is to have any chance of recovery. Our old, irrational, negative liberty way of thinking has had its day. Our irrationality and unreason, along with scientific materialism’s newfound ability to build technology of mass destruction, has led us to the brink.

We are all now faced with a stark choice: continue being irrational and perish, or embrace the Light of Reason and live, it’s a choice as simple and basic as that. Well, what’s your decision: Reason or unreason, life or death? I know my choice. I want to revalue all values. I want to become Hyperrational. I want to LIVE. I want to help create a New World Order where everyone is living life to its fullest, where everyone is 100% actualized and dynamic, where everyone is rational. This is humanity’s Sacred Cause, I’m preparing for the challenge, are you?

excellent cosmology-focused mathematicist rationalist idealist book in the best modern philosophy series
By David Melik
This is the best (along with his others and those of the two associated writers) introductory modern series on rationalist idealism in Classical Greek & Cartesian & German Idealist philosophy & postmodernism, including Pythagoreanism/Illumination, Platonism, Hermetism, Gnosticism, Leibnizianism, Hegelianism, formal & natural & social science, religion, and the arts, in this case such as mathematics/mathematicism, cosmology, and more in-depth philosophy analysis. This is the best series that explains reality more clearly than anything else.

Modern Hindu Personalism: The History, Life, and Thought of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, by Ferdinando Sardella

Modern Hindu Personalism explores the life and works of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati (1874-1937), a Vaishnava guru of the Chaitanya school of Bengal. Ferdinando Sardella examines Bhaktisiddhanta's background, motivation and thought, especially as it relates to his creation of a modern traditionalist institution for the successful revival of Chaitanya Vaishnava bhakti. Sardella provides the historical background as well as the contemporary context of the India in which Bhaktisiddhanta lived and functioned, in the process shedding light on such topics as colonial culture and sensibilities, the emergence of an educated middle-class, the rise of the Bengal Renaissance, and the challenge posed by Protestant missionaries.

Bhaktisiddhanta's childhood, education and major influences are examined, as well as his involvement with Chaitanya Vaishnavism and the practice of bhakti. Sardella places Bhaktisiddhanta's life and work within a taxonomy of modern Hinduism and compares the significance of his work to the contributions of other major figures such as Swami Vivekananda. Finally, Bhaktisiddhanta's work is linked to the development of a worldwide movement that today involves thousands of American and European practitioners, many of whom have become respected representatives of Chaitanya bhakti in India itself.

Review

"Modern Hindu Personalism is a significant contribution to scholarship not only of the modern Gaudiya Vaisnava movement but also of the religious history of Bengal within the last half of the colonial period. Adding greatly to our understanding of the development of Hinduism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the context of colonialism and a rising Indian nationalism, this book should be widely read by scholars of the history of colonial India and religion." --Gavin Flood, Professor of Hindu Studies and Comparative Religion, University of Oxford

Deserved attention to Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati
By Tom J. Guild
"Modern Hindu Personalism" was Oxford University Press's choice when it came to nominating an OUP book for the 2013 American Academy of Religion award for Best First Book in the History of Religion. Should it win in November, this book will bring deserved attention to Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, a name that does not rings bells in the Indian context, as the name of Gandhi does.

"Bhaktisiddhanta played a vital role through his work," Julius Lipner says in his Foreword, "in articulating the theology and role" of the modern Gaudiya Vaishnava movement, which "was to have a palpable and and familiar impact on the Western stage." Some thirty years after Bhaktisiddhanta passed on (in 1937), his movement was propelled to surprising heights and his perspective on the Chaitanya Vaishnava school of Bengal was spread rapidly worldwide, because one of his disciples, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, founded the Hare Krishna movement (which, Lipner says, "continues to exert its spiritual effect on our consumerist Western societies").

Professor Gavin Flood notes that this book significantly contributes to the scholarship of "the religious history of Bengal within the last half of the colonial period." I enjoyed reading how personalism opposed nondualist theology and affirmed a universalist dimension to religious devotionalism, in the face of caste in India and the non-Hindu culture of the West.

Great resource
By M. Dale
This book not only compiles a wealth of information about India's political, historical, religious and social situation at the time of Bhaktisiddhanta, it tells his story in a way that is easily accessible to anyone regardless of previous knowledge of the subject. The story is presented in an unbiased manner, recounting an amazing quantity of details about Bhakitsiddhanta's journey from offspring of Bhaktivinode to religious visionary himself. A must have for anyone interested in Guadiya Vaishnavism.

A FOUNDER OF MODERN SPIRITUALITY

Among spirituality books, there are those that cloud the issue and those that clarify. "Modern Hindu Personalism" is a breath of fresh air. Anyone who enjoys a well-written account of the journey to self-realization will profit from this articulate and detailed account of a modern-day pioneer of devotional yoga. Highly recommended.

Worldly Affiliations: Artistic Practice, National Identity, and Modernism in India, 1930-1990, by Sonal Khullar

The purpose of art, the Paris-trained artist Amrita Sher-Gil wrote in 1936, is to "create the forms of the future” by “draw[ing] its inspiration from the present.” Through art, new worlds can be imagined into existence as artists cultivate forms of belonging and networks of association that oppose colonialist and nationalist norms. Drawing on Edward Said’s notion of “affiliation” as a critical and cultural imperative against empire and nation-state, Worldly Affiliations traces the emergence of a national art world in twentieth-century India and emphasizes its cosmopolitan ambitions and orientations.Sonal Khullar focuses on four major Indian artists—Sher-Gil, Maqbool Fida Husain, K. G. Subramanyan, and Bhupen Khakhar—situating their careers within national and global histories of modernism and modernity. Through a close analysis of original artwork, archival materials, artists’ writing, and period criticism, Khullar provides a vivid historical account of the state and stakes of artistic practice in India from the late colonial through postcolonial periods. She discusses the shifting terms of Indian artists’ engagement with the West—an urgent yet fraught project in the wake of British colonialism—and to a lesser extent with African and Latin American cultural movements such as Ngritude and Mexican muralism. Written in a lucid and engaging style, this book links artistic developments in India to newly emerging histories of modern art in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Drawing on original research in the twenty-first-century art world, Khullar shows the persistence of modernism in contemporary art from India and compares its function to Walter Benjamin’s ruin. In the work of contemporary artists from India, modernism is the ground from which to imagine futures. This richly illustrated study juxtaposes little-known, rarely seen, or previously unpublished works of modern and contemporary art with historical works, popular or mass-reproduced images, and documentary photographs. Its innovative art program renders newly visible the aesthetic and political achievements of Indian modernism.

From the Inside Flap
“Beautifully written, compellingly argued, Sonal Khullar’s book not only offers a major contribution to the study of Indian modernism, it also advances our methodological understanding of modern art at large. A vital addition to an exciting body of emerging art-historical scholarship that promises to fundamentally transform received ideas on modernism in the coming years.”—Iftikhar Dadi, Cornell University

“An important intervention in the history of artistic modernism in twentieth-century India. Khullar makes the critical move of connecting these artists with the larger ‘art worlds’ in which they stand—worlds constituted by the institutions of art education, art criticism, art collecting, art exhibitions, and the forming of new art publics.”—Tapati Guha-Thakurta, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata

“Sonal Khullar makes her debut with an original and provocative work on India’s role in twentieth-century global art. She forces us to rethink many of the issues one takes for granted, based on her fresh reading of four iconic figures: Amrita Sher-Gil, M.F. Husain, K.G. Subramanyan, and Bhupen Khakhar. Provocatively argued, this book is a must-read for art students, critics, and all those who are interested in modern Indian art, as well as all concerned with global modernism.”—Partha Mitter, University of Sussex

“A welcome offering in the emerging field of twentieth-century South Asian art; it presents a rich rethinking of Indian artists’ relation to modernity, postcoloniality, and the global art world. In addition to its important contribution to the discipline of art history, this work will speak to scholars in literary studies, gender and sexuality studies, history, anthropology, museum studies, and anyone with a wider concern with global, transnational histories.”—Rebecca M. Brown, Johns Hopkins University

"Khullar is a wonderful storyteller. In this original and persuasive study, she develops Edward Said’s term, “affiliations” to describe India’s modern and contemporary art as the unmaking and remaking of the dominant tropes of modernism, and the regimes of global capitalism to which Indian artists were exposed through British colonial rule, world travels, education, and the cosmopolitan culture of Indian cities. Art making becomes world making in Khullar's account as she promotes her historical method as a rigorously conceived dialectic of past and present, and explores in contemporary art the presence and persistence of mid-century modernism as a “ruin” of global histories."—Ajay J. Sinha, Mount Holyoke College, author ofImagining Architects: Creativity in the Religious Monuments of India

I liked this story but ,I wish it was longer. I wish it started before Luke and Kate met to see how his awful stepmother and half brother were to him. I wanted to see his stepmother squirm and suffer after Luke found out the truth.

So I finally found a book I wanted to read but it was a short story. I could of completely gotten lost in hundreds of pages with these characters. But with that being said deff worth the read.
