Some Quality Analysis

I just saw this book at the near by B&N today. Originally I thought it would be another book advertising unsound systems to club players, so I decided to check its quality. I mainly checked the chapter dealing with my rep (1.d4 Nc6 2.d5 Ne5 3.e4 e6 4.f4 recommended by Avrukh). To my surprise, the quality of the book is far better than I initially thought. For example, I learned that this move order is an inaccuracy, as 4...ed5! 5.fe5 Qh4 is a draw. Then I checked the right move order (1.d4 Nc6 2.d5 Ne5 3.f4 Ng6 4.e4 e6 5.de6 fe6 6.Nf3). Here the author has found a strong move (novelty?) 6...d5 instead of the common 6...Nc5. The author tried to prove that black already has equality here, and after some analysis I have to agree with him. So in the end I decide to abandon my initial line, and try other systems.
Although I did not have enough time to check the Nimzowitsch Defence, I believe that the analysis would be quite solid, as many lines has been checked by Houdini.
In summary, if you want are interested in playing these minor systems, you should consider this book.

Excellent Book!

I like this book a lot! The author is a very strong FM (around 2400) and plays the opening himself which usually is a sign the book will be good, and this one is no exception. Advocating 1.Nc6 he takes it very seriously yet not overly seriously which makes for enjoyable reading. The explanations are clear and well written. It's as if he's there reading your thoughts because he doesn't leave you wondering as he covers all bases in an objective and easy to follow book. Armed with personal experience, thematic games and computer assessment, Schuyler delivers a compelling argument why the Dark Knight System is a great weapon for anyone, especially the club player. I have to say this was one of the best opening books I have ever read.

d4 nc6 covering with good detail all the testing lines

this is it! finally a real nimzowitsch defense book that's daring and original yet sound. the unfortunate truth for the longest time has been that reliable material on the nimzowitsch defense has been rare and either bland or outdated. 1e4 and 2.nc3 has been tricky to deal with, 2.nf3 has been meet with 5 replies , all with significant concrete problems and no author has dared write with authority on 1.d4 nc6 with the exception o an amateurish book by pickard dubbed the bozo indian. this book effectively deals with all such problems.

the book begins by covering 1.d4 nc6 covering with good detail all the testing lines, as well the major sidelines for white. attempts like 2.bg5 and 2.nf3 are covered, and the author does a find job with this appetizer chapter.

chapter two introduces the dark knight system where black plays a type of flexible pirc/king's indian set up. covers the mikenas defense 2.c4 e5 which leads often to superior versions of the tango, since black can check with an opportune 3.bb4+ and with possibilities of an early f5. i agree with the author's explanation that the more common lines with ng6 face problems with an early h4, while i think black is still fine, the author's line give's black more choices.

chapter 3 covers the bozo-indian. my only complain here is that the lines with d5 and exe6 as opposed to fxe6 get little coverage when they seem like the safest lines, and indeed what i play. that aside, i must commend the author for not letting a line slip away. he even covers 6.h4 which for the longest i thought was the refutation of the fxe6 lines. i ever change or decide to add fxe6 this book has it all. some lines where white can trade d3 bishop for the g6 knight are not my cup of tea but at least black has a dynamic position. the author also did us a favor and explained with detail how to win the game after the f4 e5 f5? Qh4 trap which is actually tricky to figure out OTB. he also covers the amazing draw trap where after f4 e6!? fxe5 qh4+! with a draw by perpetual. i was surprised that the author didnt mention that the montevideo retreat with 2...nb8 can transpose back to some of the pirc like lines.

chapter 5 covers the e5 nimzowitsch and i have no objection with its treatment, although i prefer the d5 nimzowitsch. play nc6 by winewski is the book that covers this line which is unfortunate since the only two things i learned from that book are the 3. qxd5 lines in the d5 nimzowitsch and that after 2.f4 d5 3.e5 d5! line (and the author's line here is just as creative 3...g5!?). my only problem with the e5 nimzowitsch is that white can force a transposition to a scotch game, but the autor covers this as well.

chapter 5 is a blessing. for the first time, black finally has a reply 2.nf3 that is solid and respectable even by engine standards. black recommends 2.d6 3.nf6 and 4.g6. this move has the added advantage to allow black to play the other attempts at the nimzowitsch declined , like the miles system (nf6 bg4, e6) mestrovic system (Same but with e5) or even 3.e5 so while these lines arent too reliable if played religiously, especialy agaisnt preparation, the nimzo player can keep the opponents guessing with 2.d6. aside from this black enters a pirc like formation completely side-stepping the austrian attack.

chapter 6 solves the trick of 2.nc3 with the waiting 2. nf6!. i was suspect of this move at first because if black attempts to force to a transposition to the positions of chapter 5, white can dish out lines with an early f4 or even bg5 , but the author shows that after f4 e5! is completely fine for black despite the 5 replies possible and bg5 is harmless. the rest of the book is decent filler involving how to respond to 1.c4 2.nf3 and other white openings.

the few complains i have are simply a matter of preference and not analysis so this book is a definite 5 stars and highly recommended book for nimzowitsch fanatics out there. As a 2000+ rated USCF expert who specializes in nc6 ,i will recommend this book over winewski's (which i also reviewed) any day. don't let the fact the author is a "mere" FIDE master fool you, he wisely is up to date on how to effectively use an engine to access foreign territory.

After having the opportunity to make use of this manual I no longer feel that it is worth the 4 stars I had given it previously. I used it the other day to remove the front tire and found it had no useful advice. I also wanted to remove the front axle and it looks like I will have to look elsewhere for that information.

Simple but useful book

Scaling MongoDB is a short book that focuses on how scaling works on the document centered database of the same name.

The book is an enjoyable introduction to scaling MongoDB.

It begins by defining concepts such as sharding or splitting and in how MongoDB splits data between servers.

Step by step the book guide us in how to implement a database cluster, its configuration and administration.

It is so easy that in less than an hour you can have running a cluster in, for example, Amazon EC2 for testing.

It also offers a few tips on how to configure the database depending on the data you're working in.

This book is not a complete manual or an administration guide and it doesn't want to be on, it only provides us an introduction to mongoDB capabilities.
In short, a simple but useful book.

Not a book!

Perhaps it is my fault, I should not have assumed that what looked like a book, cost as much as a book, was really a book and not just a pamphlet.

I was wrong!

This is little more than a pamphlet on MongoDB. It does have some good information, information you will easily be able to digest in a couple of hours tops. That said the depth of the information is not sufficient, how could it be, it is just a pamphlet.

Making matters worse, the content is woefully out of date. It is so out of date, that the pamphlet should be pulled from the shelves.

It would make a good primer on MongoDB 3 years ago at about $10.

I cannot see anyone purchasing this pamphlet at this point being satisfied with the purchase. It is so thin that O'rielly was unable to print anything on the spine. I feel abused, thanks O'rielly.

I am new to mongo but this book has been helpful in evaluating and learning about how to scale with it. It's a great book on Mongo, succinct and complete. It doesn't elaborate on every possible scaling topic, but it's enough detail to make important architectural decisions. Mongo is a great new technology, and this book is a good companion. For more info on using mongo in general, check out "MongoDB: The Definitive Guide"

Incomparable insights into the unique techniques of a modern musical genius.

Fabulous old 1960's volume, received, startlingly, in like-new condition. Some have complained here that the musical tips within are "too much in a 1960's, Mancini style". Wull....umm....YEAH? As they would be, and that's the beauty of the book, as Mancini was a superlative pop/jazz arranger, and any modern arranger does well to learn what stylish magic he was able to create with different voicings and sonorities. The book comes with three, double-sided, 5" 33-1/3 vinyl records, protected in paper sleeves, which give aural examples of the many musical phrases Mancini describes in the book, arranged in his unique style, so you'll have to scare up an old vinyl-style turntable to play them. My records seem never to have been played at all, so pristine are they. I transferred mine to digital immediately and have them saved to hard-disk for future reference. I personally adore the fab MCM fontfaces and colors on the cover of the book, too. This is a real gem, and my copy, printed in the early 60's, was lucky to be in superb condition; almost as though fate had saved it just for me.

The Keys to Mancini's Music

OK, People, listen up! This IS NOT a text book on elementary arranging or on music theory. This is a totally outstanding instruction manual on how and why Mancini wrote and arranged HIS music so the reader could understand his methods. This book assumes you have studied music and elementary arranging, and know how to play an instrument and put spots on charts. If you have listened to Mancini's work and want to know how and why he did what he did, for example why "Walk On The Wild Side", or any of his other works, sounds so cool, then this is the book for you. Well worth the price.

I bought this book to replace my original, purchased in college for a music arranging class. It was excellent then, and has not diminished any in years since. Henry Mancini was a master composer/arranger, from whom I will probably never stop learning. I am only sorry I never had the chance to meet him in person.

Amazing

Beautiful to look at! Gives many details about the characters not specified in the film itself such as background/personality traits. It's very interesting to look at the sketches and original ideas of each scene and compare it to how it came out in the final product. If you're a fan of Miyazaki, just love this movie, or are simply interested in the process of creating this movie's art, it's a great book to have. It never gets old.

MUST HAVE if you are a Miyazaki fan !

This is a beautiful book. I bought it as a Christmas present for my roommate who is a devout Miyazaki fan. She adored it. The artwork inside the book is absolutely beautiful. Its a great hardback cover that wont get worn or torn over time. Its a definite buy in my opinion. Im even considering buying another copy for myself!

Studio Ghibli Library does it again

All of the titles in the Studio Ghibli Library series are gorgeous and worth buying, and this one is no exception. It follows the same format as the other titles and is hardback with no dust cover and is 176 pages, which makes it a little shorter than the others. This may be due to the fact that it does not contain the screenplay from the film.

The book is divided into the following chapters:

Initial concept sketches
The art of animated films
Totoro animation technique
Totoro production report

The Art of Animated Film chapter contains concept sketches, storyboards, concept art, cel art, and film images. You may recognize Kazuo Oga's artwork and this is a real treat for those who enjoy his work like I do.

This is my favorite Miyazaki film and so this title in particular is a real treat.

Highly recommended.

The previous version was from 1991 so I was recommended to buy the 2015 version. Since the previous version and this current version are over 20 years apart, the newer version has a lot more newer stuff in it (especially with the advent of computers with faster processors, GUI's, etc...yay Moore's Law). This is an amazing and well written textbook on the complex subject that is groundwater modeling. For anyone curious about groundwater modeling or getting in depth into it, I highly recommend this book. I got it for my groundwater modeling class for grad school.

I am only giving it 4/5 stars because after a month several of the pages started falling out...despite the fact the textbook was bought brand new. I think there is something wrong with the binding. Whenever I open the book I hear small little cracking noises coming from the binding. Several of my class-mates who got the same book started noticing several of their pages were falling out too. If the publishers or authors of this book are reading this review, please fix this problem! Your book content is amazing but the book's structural integrity is failing!
