The Coherence of Theism (Clarendon Library of Logic and Philosophy), by Richard Swinburne

This book investigates what it means, and whether it is coherent, to say that there is a God. The author concludes that, despite philosophical objections, the claims which religious believers make about God are generally coherent; and that although some important claims are coherent only if the words by which they are expressed are being used in stretched or analogical senses, this is in fact the way in which theologians have usually claimed they are being used. This revised edition includes various minor corrections and clarifications.

Superb!

Richard Swinburne came highly recommended to me. Yet, after reading this book, I can say that he has greatly exceeded my expectations. I found Swinburne's argumentation to be clear, concise, and in many cases interesting. But not easy. There were several parts of his book which I had to read, and re-read, in order to fully understand his line of thought, which I expected.

Swinburne's task is to discover whether or not Theism is coherent. He concludes that it (probably) is. He doesn't argue that it's true per say merely that the Theist can not be charged with holding incoherent views. The book is split into three separate sections. In the first, Swinburne goes about defining what it means for something to be `coherent' and `incoherent.' He argues that a statement is incoherent if it entails a self-contradictory statement. He also argues that the easiest way to find a statement to be coherent is if that statement entails another statement which is coherent. He spends the rest of section 1 describing religious language--i.e. whether language describing God is used equivocally, univocally, or analogously. Throughout the book Swinburne maintains that we can describe God using words (such as "love" and "good") in their `mundane' senses without (always) appealing to analogy.

In section 2, Swinburne argues for a `contingent' god. He looks at eight different characteristics that Theists have typically used to describe God--an omnipresent spirit, free and creator of the universe, omnipotent, omniscient, perfectly good, a source of moral obligation, eternal, and immutable. He goes through each and argues first, that such notions are in fact coherent, and second such notions can be successfully defended against critiques. The bulk of the book takes up this portion. Perhaps what I found most interesting was how he indicated how several of these characteristics (for example, omnipotent and omniscient) entailed other characteristics (omnipresent spirit).

In the final section, Swinburne argues for the notion of a necessary being. He first lists different criteria for something to be necessary. Then he sees how these criteria apply to God's existence, and God's possession of these characteristics. He concludes that in order for a Theist to express what he normally expresses when saying that "God exists" the Theist must use some terms in a slightly analogous way. And since, it's not clear which terms are being analogously, and to what degree the question of coherence cannot (ultimately) be removed from the question of whether or not Theism is true. All in all, I highly recommend Swinburne's book as a fascinating read and a great defense of the coherency of theism.

This book is the first of his trilogy, the next book being "The Existence of God" and concluding with "Faith and Reason."

THE FIRST VOLUME OF SWINBURNE'S FAMED "TRILOGY" DEFENDING THEISM
By Steven H Propp
Richard G. Swinburne (born 1934) is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford; he has written many other books such as Is There a God?, The Existence of God, Faith and Reason, Was Jesus God?, etc.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1977 book, "this book... is concerned solely with the central core of theistic belief, that God exists, that there is a God. It is not concerned primarily with whether this belief is true or with whether we can know that it is true or with whether we can know it to be true, but with the prior questions of what it means and whether it is coherent... It will, however, reach the conclusion that the question of the coherence of the belief that there is a God cannot altogether be separated from the question of the truth." (Pg. 1)

He admits, "If the terms in the definition of God are to be understood in the analogical senses I cannot prove for certain that claims that there exists such a God are or are not coherent. I can only indicate the considerations which are relevant to showing their coherence or incoherence. My main conclusion will be that we only have good grounds for supposing such claims coherent if we have good grounds for supposing them true. Whether we do have such grounds is a question that lies outside the scope of this book." (Pg. 5)

He explains, "This book is designed to argue the issues with considerable rigor and thoroughness... these qualities ... are needed in a context where men are familiar with any of the arguments of modern analytic philosophers relevant to these issues. They are needed too where we are trying to be a clear as possible about the meaning of the central doctrines of theism..." (Pg. 6) Later, he clarifies, "In general I have assumed in this book so far that it is one thing to show the coherence of a supposition and another to show its truth. If, unfortunately, we have to rely on an indirect argument for coherence, the only evidence we have of coherence is also evidence of truth." (Pg. 49)

About the analogical senses of words used in theology, he states, "theology... is in no way unique in this. Science does so, and I shall shortly illustrate this from Quantum Theory. One can also readily conceive of men other than professional scientists giving words analogical senses in order to describe phenomena which evade normal description..." (Pg. 62) Later, he notes, "I shall seek to establish that some creedal claims are coherent, that others can be coherent only if words are being used in analogical senses, but that purported direct proofs that they are or that they are not coherent in the latter case, fail." (Pg. 71)

He summarizes, "the full claim which I consider... is that there exists eternally an omnipresent spirit, free, creator of the universe, omnipotent, omniscient, perfectly good, and a source of moral obligation... we may understand the words in which it is expressed in their mundane senses... so long as `omnipotent' and `omniscient' are understood in ways more restricted than their etymology would suggest. If this is done, the claim is a coherent one... If, however, [a theist] insists on understanding the words in the senses other than those which I specify, I argue that the claim is not coherent." (Pg. 98)

He suggests, "the theist's claim that there is an omnipresent spirit who has free will and is the creator of the universe is to be understood as follows: (a) there is an individual X who is an omnipresent spirit and the creator of the universe, (b) everything that X does, X does intentionally, (c) no agent or natural law or state of the world or other causal factor in any way influences X to have the intentions on which he acts, that is to choose to act as he does." (Pg. 145)

He argues, "So to knock theism into a coherent shape, we are faced with the choice of providing a narrower definition of `omnipotence' on which being `omnipotent' is compatible with being perfectly free, or choosing another word to describe the extent of divine power... modern secular understanding of the natural meaning of `omnipotent' suggests that being `omnipotent' is incompatible with being `unable to do evil' and so suggests that we ought to describe the power of a perfectly free being by some other word than `omnipotent'... I suggest that... [God] is omnipotent in the following sense... he is able to bring about the existence of any logically consistent state of affairs x after t... given that he does not believe that he has overriding reason for refraining from bringing about x. Does this limitation of God's omnipotence make his less worthy of worship? Why should it?... Why should the fact that his intentions cannot fail to be realized through interference from causal influences make him any less worthy of worship?" (Pg. 160-161)

More controversially, he asserts, "I conclude that it seems doubtful whether it is logically possible that there should be both an omniscient person and also free men; but that it is definitely logically impossible that there should be an omniscient person who is himself perfectly free---all this given the natural sense of `omniscient' which I delineated [earlier]..." (Pg. 172) He explains, "there exists (now) an omnipresent spirit, perfectly free, creator of the universe, omnipotent and omniscient... The God thus postulated brings about all things which exists (or permits them to exist) and in so doing knows what he brings about and what that will lead to, in so far as he has brought about things which physically necessitate certain effects. Yet to maintain his freedom, he limits his knowledge of his own future choices." (Pg. 178)

He states, "If morality is objective, the naturalistic account of it is correct and morality is based on a set of logically necessary truths. In one discipline... philosophy, it is as easy or difficult to reach agreed results as it is in morals. Yet there is a sufficient amount and kind of agreement over methods and results in philosophy for it to be termed an objective discipline, and its results termed true or false. Therefore morals is also -properly accounted an objective discipline and moral judgements correctly termed true or false. (Pg. 201)

He also proposes, "the theist's only hope for maintaining the inner coherence of his claim that God is timeless and its coherence with others of his claims would be to maintain that many words are being used in highly analogical senses... although a theist would be justified on occasion in using words in an analogical sense, nevertheless too many appeals to analogical senses of words would make sentences in which the words were empty of content... the theist has no need to incorporate the doctrine of the timelessness of God into his theism. He can easily do without it and all the difficulties it brings, and rely instead on the simple and easy coherent understanding of God's eternity which the delineated earlier." (Pg. 221-222)

He summarizes, "The argument... has been that it is coherent to suppose that there exists eternally an omnipresent spirit, perfectly free, the creator of the universe, omnipotent, omniscient, perfectly good, and a source of moral obligation---so long as `omnipotent' and `omniscient' are understood in somewhat restricted senses. Such a being I have called a personal ground of being, and I have argued that there can be only one such being... If the claim of theism is simply that there exists a personal ground of being then, I believe, I have proved this claim to be coherent. However, my proof may not be accepted by all reasonable men... The only way to convince such opponents would be by yet more detailed argument, and the size of this book precludes that. Nevertheless, I hope that I may have convinced many reasonable men." (Pg. 233)

He says, "The duty to worship... arises from a general duty to pay respect to persons of various kinds... there is another and very different reason for worship. For worship of God is public acknowledgement of his existence and rightful sovereignty. It might be urged... that there is a duty on all men to acknowledge at any rate to themselves, perhaps overtly... perhaps even publicly, their most fundamental beliefs. A man owes it to himself and to his fellows to confess his deepest convictions. If that is so then the believer in God has a duty to acknowledge this belief." (Pg. 292)

He concludes, "In this book... We have seen the different things which can be meant when a man claims that there is a God. Some of these doctrines I have shown to be incoherent, and others to be coherent. I have also developed a doctrine... that there is a God who is miniessentially a personal ground of being... This doctrine I have been unable either to prove coherent or to prove incoherent ... However, I also showed that if we had good inductive evidence for the truth of this central doctrine of theism, we would thereby have indirect evidence of its coherence... How ought the theist and atheist to regard this conclusion? ... The atheist's best hope for defeating theism lies ... in attempting to show it false on the evidence of experience. The theist... must believe that his claims are coherent... But if there were a straightforward proof of their coherence, this would mean... that the claims of theism could be spelled out at greater length in sentences, the meaning of which men could grasp fully and understand completely." (Pg. 294-295)

This book, along with the others of Swinburne's "trilogy" (The Existence of God; Faith and Reason) are "must reading" for anyone seriously studying the philosophy of religion.

In this short work, more like a diary, just prior to WWII she explains her sense of foreboding for the future of civilization. She and her husband advocated that America stay out of foreign wars, and maintain its equilibrium as a beacon of liberty and sanity. (Goodreads)

An older example of what the conservative movement still believes.
By Brian C in Texas
Everything Franklin Roosevelt thought about Charles Lindbergh, as a big guy in America First and someone who did not oppose Nazi Germany, was true - and more so about his wife, who thought that beautiful things were happening in Germany, Hitler's Germany. A true insight into the opinions and basic beliefs of the conservative core of opposition to Roosevelt - and American conservative thought, then - and now. Remember who her father was ? Dwight Morrow, an investment banker, and financier. That group hasn't changed a bit since the 1930s.

From the Publisher
For Christians Who Care Enough to Give Honest Answers to the Questions Seekers Ask How can a merciful God send people to hell? Is Jesus really is the only way to God? Why should I trust the Bible when it's full of inconsistencies? Tough questions. Reasonable questions. The kinds of challenging questions skeptics and seekers are asking, that demand informed and satisfying answers from Christians. The Tough Questions series offers an organized approach to answering modern seekers' questions about Christianity. In the process, it gives an overview of key elements of the Christian faith. This honest, informative series is the result of Garry Poole and Judson Poling's extensive work with seekers at Willow Creek Community Church. In six sessions designed to get small groups thinking, discussing, and sharing, each book deals head-on with questions and objections commonly raised about the Christian faith. Tough Questions deals frankly with the challenging arguments of secularism. Quotes from non-Christian skeptics in various disciplines, together with responses from credible Christian apologists, fuel the discussions. A great resource for small groups, churches, and Sunday school classes, this series offers seekers and believers alike the kinds of reasonable, factual answers that inspire faith, conviction, and trust in the reality and claims of Christ. Don't Christians and Jews believe in the same God? What's the difference between Islam and Christianity? Isn't Mormonism similar to Christianity? How does Christianity compare with the New Age movement? What sets Christianity apart from all other religions?

Love Stobel and Jesus and the bible, but not this
By Woodman
At first the questions were very thought prevoking and engaging and allowed for very fruitful conversation! But the opening paragraphs were very corny and sometimes awkward to read. The author really could have done a better job at constructing the questions, excerpts. Although this is tough questions for non Christians some of the questions are blunt for someone who isn't a Christian. It's obviously biased towards Christianity which is okay(because I'm Christian) but it's supposed to be for both nonchristians and Christians. But the questions that are biased are ones that would anger or cause people to leave , but then everything else is vaguely neutral. Example is aren't jehova witness Mormons Christians also? Then it proceeds to call Mormons or Jehovas cult and asks the group of they think they are a cult. I love Lee strobel and his other work, but this book was a huge let down. I was so excited about this but it was not what I expected. This would be a awesome small group study for all ready believers to grow and challenge what and why they believe what they believe, but it was hard for people who are non Christians to discern the truth mixed in with all the philosophy. Love the book for myself but not for people seeking spiritual truth.

Incredible experience with college age kids!
By Zoo Keeper
This is an incredible book - it has the ability to change lives and it is EASY!! I have been working with youth for about 10 years and have never come across something that packs as powerful a punch as this book. I read Garry Poole's book, "Seeker Small Group" this past spring and felt convicted that I needed to do something like what he was talking about. As he said, having been a Christian for many years, the number of adult non-Christians that I know well are very, very few. I continued to mull over his Seeker book and purchased "Don't All Religions Lead to God", just to see what it was all about. That is when it hit me: Youth! I have good repore with youth due to my years as a Sunday school teacher. I have been firmly convicted for several years that youth of today have trouble claiming Christianity as the way to Christ/God/Heaven. I reserved a local coffee shop after hours, sent out a mass text to former students 19 years or older, told them to ask friends, and that's all it took. I had 12 the first time, and between 13 and 15 the next 4 times. They were bringing their friends... Incredible discussion, lots of opinions, I can't say enough good things about this book. I did get the Leaders Guide - you really can't do the study properly without it. The kids didn't want it to end and were asking me if we could do another one when they come home from college at Christmas and also next summer! And trust me, it wasn't because of me - I simply acted as the facilitator.
Way to go Garry Poole - homerun!

very impressed with handling a difficult and great question
By Noah Filipiak
This is a great book for leading a group of seekers. It's not going to work for your traditional church small group of Christians, that isn't what it's designed for. It does a great job of asking open questions that give everyone a chance to give their feedback and ownership of the conversation, while at the same time the questions lead towards a conclusion that makes sense with the Gospel. Highly recommended for working with non-Christians.

Marcy Johnson was a determined woman on a single-minded mission. Her high-heeled navy pumps clicked furiously on the pavement as she resolutely made her way through the crowded Manhattan streets.

Her mind was focused on one thing—or more precisely on one person: Nathan Carter. She had only met him a week ago, but that first glance had been enough. He was definitely a man she wanted to get to know better. Now, she had one goal—getting the elusive hunk to admit he was interested in her, too.

They had shared a searing kiss on New Year's Eve, but since then, he had avoided her like the plague; however, she had never been one to be put off for long, especially not when there was something she wanted. A smile tilted the corners of her mouth; Nathan Carter was about to find that out firsthand.

Not that she needed an excuse, but she did have a builtin reason to seek him out; his sister and her brother were getting married in three days, and as they were both in the wedding party, they naturally had things to discuss and do pertaining to the bride and groom.

Knowing which suite Nathan occupied, Marcy breezed into the very expensive ornate Muse hotel and made her way to the elevators without stopping at the reception desk. She had no intention of having herself announced so he could make up a convenient excuse not to see her. She smiled and punched the button that would take her to the designated floor. When the doors closed, she took a compact from her navy bag, freshened up her red lipstick and made sure her hair was in place before exiting the elevator when it stopped.

While she walked to Nathan's door, she removed her black leather coat and peeled matching gloves from fingers. Brushing an imaginary piece of lint from the lapel of the figure-hugging navy skirt suit, she took a deep breath, released it and resolutely knocked on the door, waiting impatiently for Nathan to answer. When he did, she fought back a laugh when shock followed by vague annoyance registered on his handsome face.

"Good morning, Nathan," she brightly greeted, walking past him into the room without waiting for an invitation.

"Come on in," he said as he sarcastically waved his hand, closing the door behind her.

He scratched his hair-covered chin. Lord, help him! What was Marcy Johnson doing here, and more importantly why was he so glad to see her? Because you're attracted to her, you idiot!

As always, she looked fabulous and smelled sinfully wonderful. Every nerve ending in his traitorous body stood at rapt attention as they did whenever they were in the same room together. He silently cursed her disastrous effect on his usual steadfast equilibrium.

"What's wrong, handsome? Get up on the wrong side of the bed?"

Appreciative eyes slowly traveled over the white terry cloth robe he wore, lingering at the V opening that parted revealing a tantalizing glimpse of his smooth, muscled dark brown chest. She fought down an insane urge to jump inside the robe with him and let nature take its course—mmm, mmm, mmm!

"What are you doing here, Marcy?" He pulled his robe together and belted it tighter, eliciting a teasing smile from his gorgeous intruder.

"Well, since our respective siblings are getting married in a few days, I thought you might want to go shopping for a wedding present with me."

He swallowed a groan as she sat on the edge of his unmade bed and crossed those shapely long legs, hitching the already outrageously short skirt higher on her upper thighs. Her actions caused a quickening of his pulse and an uncomfortable tightening in his groin.

Say no, he silently ordered. In a matter of weeks, maybe days, you're on your way to Yemen with the rest of your team on a secret mission to rescue the U.S. envoy and his aides from insurgents. You don't have the time or the right to start anything you know you can't finish with Marcy, so nip it in the bud—now! Remember your training, and exhibit the self-control you know you possess. Even though you want to say yes, say no.

"I plan on doing my shopping later," he replied.

"When?" At his silence, she smiled cajolingly. "Come on, Nathan. You have to buy them a present and so do I. Why not come along with me now?"

She stood, walked over to him and touched his arm, feeling firm muscles contract beneath her fingers. Lord, he was rock-solid hard. How did a lawyer get an athletic body like his? Everything about him was just yummy from his close-cropped black hair to his neatly trimmed goatee that just begged for her fingers' touch. Her heart skipped several beats as she once again marveled at his dizzying effect on her.

"Don't you have to be somewhere—like at work?"

"Not this morning." Unable to resist, she took a step closer. "I'm going in later. I cleared my schedule especially for you. You're not going to let me go to all that trouble for nothing, are you?"

"I appreciate…" He paused, groaning inwardly. He was so close to caving that it was embarrassing.

"Good, then let's go." Her fingers tightened on his arm.

A smile played about his lips. "Do you mind if I change first?"

"Don't do it on my account." Her eyes slowly traveled over his magnificent form, lingering on the revealed flesh of his legs and chest before locking with his eyes again.

"Well, I hardly think I can go out like this." He shook his head at her.

She smiled and moved slightly closer to him until their bodies were almost touching. He smelled fresh and clean from a recent shower. His eyes darkened at her actions and seemed slightly unsteady. Good, I do affect him.

Removing her fingers from his arm, he moved purposefully away from temptation by walking a few feet away, bending down to pick up the clothes that were neatly laid out on the bed. He turned toward the bathroom.

"I'll be ready in a minute," he shot over his shoulder.

"I'll be waiting," she promised and laughed when he sighed loudly before closing the bathroom door behind him. She walked over to the closed door and leaned against it, "I can't believe your parents let you stay in a hotel—albeit a luxurious one."

"They weren't happy about it, but I finally convinced them it was for the best." His voice was muffled by the closed door.

"Why?"

She placed her hand on the brass knob, toying with the scandalous idea of opening it. What would he do if she sauntered in while he was dressing? The thought of the possible wonderful repercussions of such action on her part almost made her test him. But she decided to be good—for now.

"I'm officially on vacation, but there are some…things that I still need to be on top of. I'll be getting phone calls at all hours, and it's just easier if I have my own place." Inside the bathroom, he smiled as he remembered his mother's indignation as he had tried to explain that fact to her. She had not been pleased to say the least.

"A workaholic," Marcy sympathized, reluctantly dropping her hand from the doorknob and walking a few steps away.

He chuckled. "You, too?"

"Uh-huh."

She peered into his partially open closet. His clothes were neatly hung and ordered by type—shirts, dress pants, jeans, sweaters and several immaculate suits. His shoes were neatly lined at the bottom—also sorted by types. She smiled and made her way over to his dresser and picked up various objects, studying them. Again, everything was neatly lined up in its proper place indicative of a man who thrived on order; she could relate, but she was determined to inject a little well-aimed chaos into his orderly life while he was in town.

"Are you always so disciplined and in control, Nathan?"

"Always." His response was quick and sure.

She chuckled. "I knew you were going to say that."

Unable to resist, she opened a drawer and found his socks neatly folded and equally spaced. Another drawer housed his underwear—black boxers, each pair purposefully folded in the same dimensions. She ran her fingers lightly over the soft material, and her smile widened. He gave a new meaning to the word organized.

"What are you doing out there?"

"Waiting for you," she innocently responded, closing one drawer and then the other. "Were you ever in the military?"

He was silent for a full twenty seconds before warily asking, "Why do you ask?"

"Because your room is extremely well ordered with everything in its proper place. You're more organized than I am, and that's saying something," she said and laughed. "Nathan?" she prompted when he remained noticeably silent.

"I did a short stint in the marines after high school," he finally answered.

That was an interesting tidbit. She stared at the still-closed bathroom door, curiosity piqued.

"Did you ever consider going career military."

"No, military life wasn't for me. I wanted to be a lawyer. I enjoy sparring with words more than with weapons or my fists."

Okay, that was a necessary little white lie. He loved hand-to-hand combat, the nonstop action and the insane danger his secret military career exposed him to—or at least he had loved it; however, recently nagging doubts about his inability to carve out a normal personal life due to his unusual profession had started surfacing, making him question his priorities.

When he reentered the bedroom, Marcy lowered a bottle of cologne from her nose and returned it to its proper place. He arched an eyebrow at her intrusiveness.

"I'm ready." He was dressed in a cream sweater and chocolate pants. He slipped his muscled arms into the sleeves of a brown leather bomber jacket.

God, he looked good! It should be a crime for a man to be so gorgeous. He held up her coat, and she walked over and slipped it on. Unable to help herself, she then looped her hand through his arm as they walked to the door.

He inwardly groaned at the feel of her body against his. Shoving his hands into his jacket pocket, he fought down an overwhelming urge to grab and bury all ten of his fingers deeply into that gorgeous hair of hers and pull her soft, tempting mouth against his.

"You're going to have a good time, Nathan," she promised as they entered the elevator.

Not if I can help it, he silently promised.

As if she could read his mind, Marcy's smile widened—the sight was like a kick in the gut. Lord, she was a beautiful woman—one he had no business agreeing to go shopping with. He was just being polite to his future sister-in-law—no harm in that. Hell, if he could routinely deal with terrorists, assassins and threats against the United States or its citizens, he could handle going shopping with Marcy Johnson for a few hours. However, could he squelch his exponentially growing attraction to her? That was the real question for which he didn't have a satisfactory answer.

"Isn't this lovely, Nathan?" Marcy held up a silver photo album.

"Yes, lovely, just like the candlesticks were, and the picture frame and the tray at the other store," he reminded her.

He was annoyed. What he had prayed would be a short trip had turned into a marathon. Why couldn't women ever make up their minds? They had been window-shopping over two hours—he had spent two long agonizing hours fighting his attraction to this captivating, spirited woman, and each passing second in her presence felt like torture.

"True, but this is really nice, isn't it?" She lightly fingered the inlaid rose pattern, undaunted by his exasperated tones.

"Yes, Marcy, it's lovely," he dryly repeated. "I don't know why you're wasting so much time over it. You're not going to buy it."

"Women like to browse and find the best bargains." She wrinkled her nose at him as she replaced the album on the shelf. "What is it about men that you hate shopping?"

"We don't mind shopping. What we do mind is the uncertainty you women exhibit at every turn. Men know what we're looking for, go out, find it and buy it."

"Well, you must not know what you're looking for because you haven't bought anything yet, either," she sweetly reminded him.

"Maybe I'm not going to give them silver or crystal," he quickly replied.

"No?" She placed her hands on her shapely hips. "Then what do you have in mind?"

"I was thinking more along the lines of…" His voice trailed off, and he thought fast but not fast enough.

"You have no idea what you're going to get, do you?"

"Of course I do."

"Really, then tell me what it is," she challenged.

"I was thinking of something else, but since you dragged me to all of these crystal stores, I've decided on wineglasses."

She smiled and pointed behind him. "They have some lovely ones here."

"I saw them. They're not what I'm looking for."

"What type were you thinking about? Goblets? Champagne glasses? Flutes? Are you looking for a particular brand of crystal? Waterford? Baccarat? Mikasa? Bavari? Lennox?" She expertly rattled off possible choices.

"Stop hurling possibilities at me." He smiled despite himself. "I'll know them when I see them."

"Sure you will." She chuckled and couldn't resist impishly adding, "There's nothing indecisive about you."

"Are you going to get that?" He pointed to the music box in her hands.

"No." Marcy set the box down, linked her hand through his arm and pulled him away, smiling at his knowing smirk. "Let's try this other little shop down the way."

They exited one of the wonderful specialty shops in Greenwich Village and walked toward another. Marcy could get lost in this part of Manhattan for days. As they walked down the pedestrian-filled sidewalks surrounded by various shades of redbrick buildings on either side of the busy one-way street filled with cars, buses and cabs, Marcy glanced at the barren trees that littered the sidewalk; she couldn't wait for them to bloom with the arrival of spring.

She had purposefully taken him to five different places simply to prolong their time together. Now she guided him into the store where the wedding present she had ordered for Damien and Natasha was being held.

"Ms. Johnson." The female clerk beamed as they entered. "I know why you're here. Let me go and get it." She disappeared into another room.

Nathan's lips thinned. "You've already bought Natasha and Damien's present?"

"Yes." Marcy laughed at his exasperation. "Wait until you see it."

He sighed loudly and then asked, "Then why did you drag me to all those other shops?"

"I thought you might like some ideas," she innocently responded. At his look of displeasure, she asked, "Is my company so unbearable?"

Quite the contrary; he enjoyed being with her. She was a breath of fresh air, and in her presence, he felt as carefree as sails of a boat being hoisted by liberating winds. He shouldn't be here with her, but honestly, he had no desire to be anywhere else.

"I don't like being played." He tried to sound stern but failed miserably.

"And I love to play," she admitted around a chuckle, touching his arm and moving closer to him. "What are we going to do about that blatant contradiction?"

He shook his head at her as a smile played about his lips. He had never met a more brazen or fascinating woman.

"I'm sure you'll think of something," he drawled.

"Oh, I'm sure I will," she agreed.

"Here you are, Ms. Johnson." The clerk returned carefully cradling a twelve-inch crystal sculpture of a male and female ballerina, limbs frozen in movement dancing close to each other.

"Oh, it's gorgeous." Marcy approved, gently taking the figure from the woman's hands and lifting it for Nathan's inspection. "Isn't it, Nathan?"

"Yes, it's very nice." He smiled at the joy lighting up her face—joy at doing something for someone she loved.

Oh What a Kiss!!!!
By thatagirl
Our First Kiss is the Sequel to our First Dance. In the first book, the characters of Marcy Johnson and Nathan Carter were introduced. Now they have their own story. Oh, what a tale it is. From the moment Marcy set eyes on Nathan, she knew he was someone special. However, once they shared their first kiss, she knew he was the one for her. She only had one problem, getting Nathan to admit he felt the same. Sit back and read how a determined woman will not take no for an answer. Nathan never stood a chance, not that he really wanted one. This is a great romance, that you do not want to miss. Judy Hubbard has written characters they you will cheer for, until the inevitable, Happy Ending.

His Kisses Never Said No!
By LadyQuay
I really enjoyed reading Nathan and Marcy love affair come together. Marcy was a woman that knew what she wanted, and went after it. Nathan was who she wanted, and deep down he wanted her too. He really didn't have a chance in the matter though and that what made this story so funny. Seeing this two families come together was off the hook I can't wait to see what will happen next with Nicole and Alexander. Oh and their was a few secrets too, but you have to read it yourself and find out lol. Oh and if your read the other reviews before mines don't believe the hype, this was a good read.

A woman on a mission
By Romance Novels in Color
Marcy Johnson believes in "love at first sight" and is a woman on a mission to get her man. Nathan Carter is that victim - uh, man!

The heroine of Our First Kiss is drawn to the hero as soon as she lays eyes on him. Marcy's feelings are solidified when she shares a kiss with him - a kiss she initiates - at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. Despite the fact that her brother is marrying Nathan's sister and that Nathan resists her advances, she is steadfast in her pursuit of him. This beautiful, successful and intelligent stockbroker clearly knows what she wants, but my problem with Judy Lynn Hubbard's leading lady is that she's decided to give herself to him, body and soul, without really knowing anything about the man.

Nathan has a secret. His job as a government lawyer is a cover for his Black Ops missions overseas. And it's that secret that prevents him from jumping into bed with Marcy at the first opportunity and envisioning a long term relationship with her. But his resistance is no match for Marcy's wily schemes to get his attention, his and her parents' matchmaking plans, nor his own desire to give up his clandestine profession and lead a "regular" life.

While the reader knows what Nathan ultimately wants and the dilemma he faces, Marcy doesn't and she comes across as too aggressive at times. Ms. Hubbard never allows the lovers to deal with his sense of duty in a realistic and intelligent way together before he disappears "like a thief in the night" as far as Marcy is concerned. I truly believe this strong, perceptive and fiercely loyal woman could've handled the truth and gained a better understanding of the man she seemingly loved.

As the second installment in Ms. Hubbard's "Carter Family Trilogy," Our First Kiss provides a nice update on the characters from Our First Dance and an interest-piquing prologue to her next book, Our First Embrace.

A sweet book for small hands
By Irish Lace
I showed this to my just-barely-3 granddaughter and we sat down together to read it after dinner while the grownups did the dishes. My 7 year old grandson joined us, although mostly so as not to be left out. She thoroughly enjoyed it as we identified colors and counted "tars" and grandson helped by reading words for her. When I was done - although she had not been told she could take it home - she took it to her diaper bag and tucked it right in. I asked her why she put it away right away and she reported that she didn't want to "fodet it" and wanted her Daddy to read it to her at bedtime. So... I think there is no better endorsement for a children's book than that a child wants to take it home so Daddy can read it to her. I cued Mom and Dad in and Mom has since reported that she asked to take it with her to day care the following day to show to her teacher who apparently likes stars (because she passes out so many, I suppose.) Nice book.

Sweet book
By Leeshie
I actually REALLY like this book. I'm not a huge Warhol fan in general, but I figured it would be a sweet board book for my son to play with. What I didn't expect is for it to be as nice as it was. The pictures are really cute, with sweet messages on them, and there is a (somewhat distorted) mirror at the end - and what kid doesn't love a mirror? I honestly didn't expect to like this book as much as I did - I'm hoping that as my son gets older, he'll find the pictures themselves more interesting than just the joy of turning the pages!

The magnetism of Andy Warhol's name
By Grady Harp
Andy Warhol was a unique artist who declared `In the future everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes' - and thus the phrase '15 minutes of fame' grew into everyone's memory bank. Warhol was an important artist because he made the obvious artistic - silk screens of famous movie stars, Campbell soup cans, etc. He apparently also doodled.

This little book is excerpted from his collection of doodlings based on the word `So' (so many stars, so daring, so fishy etc) and as such it is cute, ending with a bit of reflective mirror that is placed opposite `I love you' and is underlined by the phrase `so there you are'.

If you're in the market for a cute little love gift, whether for Valentine's Day or any other occasion (there are SO many), this is an artsy idea. But there really is not much to it except superficial fluff. One for the Warhol fans - but not a significant addition to the oeuvre on the art of Andy Warhol. Grady Harp, February 14

A great pro-inclusion textbook
By Marian J. Lorrison
This was my Special Ed textbook in 1997 and I was looking forward to this sixth edition. It's very comprehensive and covers a wide range of topics relating to students with severe disabilities. My only reservation here is that the book is so pro-inclusion, it's really presenting a very biased viewpoint. Hypothetical students are all happily enrolled in mainstream settings where they make great educational gains because they're exposed to typical peers, who of course accept them wholeheartedly and benefit from their presence. A little unrealistic I feel.

The information is accurate and useful
By Ellen E. Conrad
Strengths: The information is useful and it is a good resource. I have begun to put tabs on pages for future reference.

Weaknesses: This book presents poorly, it appears to be a new printing of an old book. The material presented would be easier to take in and retain, in fewer words.

I also feel that it would make the book easier to read through if there were more visual supports, for example: charts, pictures, graphs, and internet links.
