A Good Beginning

Down's Economic Theory of Democracy is an easy to read introdution to the basics of voting theory. It is accessible to the casual reader as well as the hardcore acedemic. It's take on the electoral competition have become staples of high school civis as well as acedemic political theory.
Down's most famous innovation is the result that two party competition leads to both parties offering the same platform in order to maximise votes.

The most misunderstood book in political science

An Economic Theory of Democracy is among the most influential books in political science. It is also among the most misunderstood. The book has 300 pages of content. The famous median voter theorem represents three of them. The remaining 297 pages involve extensions, limitations and generalizations -- exactly the sort of thing that most critics think it lacks. In the end, the book is really about the problems of limited information rather than about a unidimensional spatial model.

I was assigned several chapters from this book to read for one of my political science classes. I can't say I've come across any other books like this that describe the nature of electoral politics and realignments when they occur.

My professor did mention that this book revolutionized just how we view the electoral process. A good read, one that I would recommend. Diagrams are useful.

About the Author
James Trefil is the Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. He has made contributions to research in elementary particle physics, fluid mechanics, medical physics (including cancer research), and the earth sciences and has written extensively about science for the general audience. He has recently completed a term as General Councilor of the American Physical Society and was awarded the prestigious Gemant Prize of the American Institute of Physics for his efforts to present science to the general public.

Robert M. Hazen is the Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University and Staff Scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington Geophysical Laboratory. He performs research on materials at high pressure and is studying the hypothesis that life arose in a deep, high-pressure environment. He is the author of more than 230 articles and 16 books on science, history, and music. A Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he has received numerous awards for his science writing.

Very good conceptual textbook, but lacks the mathematical aspects of Physics

As a means of introducing concepts and applications of Physics, this textbook is spot on. However, in an attempt to "keep the textbook focused on practical everyday uses of Physics," there is a significant lack of calculations. While it does give some basic equations for each chapter, they are typically straight forward and general, and only encompasses a select few of the equations that a student would use in a Physics class. In other words, a physics teacher will not be able to conduct a legitimate physics class teaching only out of this book. Aside from that, the questions for each section are very good at testing understanding of concepts (there are only 1 or 2 "stupid" questions in the entire book), and the problems (although limited due to the reasons mentioned above) are sufficient.

One looking for a more intensive textbook (for AP course, ect.) would be better off with a text such as Physics by Giancoli.

My professor told us that this books is going out of print, which is a shame, cause it's a great textbook: it's easy to read, it's understandable, all the while being scientific.

Excellent book for those working in critical care or studying for exams. Very easy to carry around as it's small and light. Simple alphabetical ordering of 184 drugs with clearly laid out information, mostly presented with one drug across two opposite pages. Covers key physical, pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties with limited detail, making it ideal for initial learning and as a quick reference. The outside cover provides reasonable protection against spillages and other damage so you don't have to worry about leaving it lying around.

Rub your eyes

I read Kyle Hoobin’s PDF “How To Live with Zombies” in a rush this first time. Even though the messages in this short book came across as very clear, precise, no-nonsense and, yes, compelling. Not new to a perspective of awakening that disengages as much from traditional as from New Age concepts of enlightenment I found Kyle Hoobin’s view of it refreshing and accessible. He urges the reader to finally dismiss the notion that enlightenment is a state that separates one from others and makes one ‘special’. Like other books worth reading on this subject, Hoobin makes it clear that “there are no others.” I enjoyed his suggestions for ‘exercises’ , such as spending a day observing humanity and, of course, oneself. Short of a how-to-manual which would run the risk of becoming a prescription for enlightenment and invite imitation, Hoobin nevertheless draws a clear picture of living awake while respecting individual expression of such wakeful living. A wonderful invitation to shake off the zombie sleep of the dead.
I am looking forward to re-reading this book.

A blueprint for spiritual enlightenment!

From start to finish Kyle gives his honest view of the path of and knowledge of what it means to be enlightened.
It's written in a down to earth manner and easily understandable detail.
He is a very brave man to go into his darkest place in his mind and bring it into the light and relate it to us "heroic" is a word I don't use lightly, but it is.
And indeed to be enlightened means to examine your self and shine the light of enquiry in your darkest egoic places to subdue the ego. The book is a relatively short one but worth the read!

Kyle is great when he is describing WHAT of awakening. His description has an unmistakable ring of truth. Honest and straightforward.
Where the book is lacking is HOW of awakening. As a non dual junky of traditional as well as not so traditional variety, I have heard many times that there is no HOW of awakening; rather search for HOW is the real villain etc.. But let us face it. As unenlightened lesser mortals we need some instructions of how to reach that awakened state. It is here that. The book disappoints. Or may be I am not yet destined to understand the HOW.

About the Author
ALEX BACHMUTSKY has broad experience of almost 30 years in various areas of software development, software, hardware and system architecture, technology selection and evaluation, including wireless infrastructure, security, packet processing technologies, pattern recognition, networking, high availability and multimedia. At Nokia and later at Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), Alex has been a Chief Architect for state-of-the-art high performance telecommunication gateways, from multi-chassis and multi-blade systems to pizza-box type devices integrating the latest available packet processing and system architectures. As a part of the Research and Technology Platform organization at NSN, he is continuously scouting for the newest and most promising hardware and software technologies, while actively influencing the next generation development of components and sub-systems in the area of high performance and highly scalable carrier grade data and control plane processing. The knowledge collected during this technology intelligence and evaluation work, together with extensive system design experience, became a foundation for this book.
