This one contains a shocker!

I read this book almost 30 years ago and STILL remember some of its key premises. That's how much it impacted me. There are very few other books I can say that about, and I'm an avid reader.
The authors' basic contention is that an adjusted American is a [confused] individual. If you feel slightly out of step with your friends, neighbors, and family, that--according to the authors--may in fact be a good sign, not a bad one!
One of the most interesting, and revealing (also rather shocking) postulations is that hate is the consequence of negative qualities we perceive about ourselves that instead of dealing with internally, (where we're able to resolve them), we project them onto others--usually groups such as minorities--whom we proceed to hate. This makes inutitive sense when you think about it. However, it's the opposite that's the eye-opener.
The authors claim that romantic love is the opposite of hate. They contend that when we "fall in love," what we're REALLY doing is taking those qualities about ourselves that we love and projecting them on our "loved one," where we proceed to love them. This theory explains why we're so devastated when a loved one leaves--they take qualities we've foisted off on them, with them.
Many may have second thoughts when reading this section. It's quite a novel idea. But in 30 years of studying human behavior and motivation, I've never run across a better explanation of romantic love. This theory, in my opinion, is sufficient reason to buy this nifty little book. If you're interested in different ways of looking at American motivation and behavior, you can't go too far wrong with this book.

Foundation of how I explain everyday behavior to patients.

I read this book in 1980 and it helped consolodate my thinking. It provided the basis for the way I now understand human behavior.
Every once in a while an academic who has an understanding that is profound seeks to write a book that is accessable. Unfortunatley, most of the time academics seek to obfuscate (See the work of Bernard McGrane for more on academic absurdity)
In any case, I think this is a great book. The explaination of the seeds and nature of prejudice is simple, yet profound. I think that there is a chance that if you read this book you will have significantly more insight into how your feelings can co-opt your thinking resulting in destructive and neurotic behavior. It is the most readable psych book I have ever read.

Jerome Klapka (K.) Jerome was an English writer who is best known for his comic travel story, Three Men in a Boat, and the essay collections Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow and Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow. Raised in poverty, Jerome entered into various careers in the railway, theatre, education, and law before his comic essays were accepted for publication. His writing career firmly established with the publication of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome went on to publish more than thirty works of prose and plays before his passing in 1927.

I dearly love this book. Someone gave me an antique copy when I was in grade school and it's wonderful now to have it on my Kindle. For readers who don't know Jerome K. Jerome, this is an amusing introduction to a very droll writer who was also an acute observer of his time. And it's a quick read for aficionados of Christmas ghost stories.

Jerome K. Jerome will make you laugh out loud. Told After Supper is a humorous and entertaining book. It is in the Victorian style when ghost stories were often told at Christmas. The book is a quick read, and could be read in one sitting. Told after supper is going to be a traditional Christmas read for me now.

Good manual, but not the best.

I like the information and nearly everything about the manual except for the fact that capacities and other
specs are listed in metric only rather than both metric and sae. I have to spend way too much time converting n/m
torque settings so I can set my inch/foot lb torque wrenches. I'll keep the book because of it's positives, but if I'd known this beforehand, I wouldn't have purchased it.

Cannot praise this book enough!

To begin I have already purchased three copies of this book in less than a month. The first was for myself the second two were gifts. I think this book is great for all ages and varying personality types (i.e. artsy, uptight, "no good at stuff like that", wild, vibrant, timid... ANYONE) I have always enjoyed doing creative things... this book has really shown me that I have been restricting myself and has pushed me out of my regular comfort zone. Sensory barriers have been tested for sure, which has not been an altogether unpleasant experience. I was definitely surprised by that! There is a limit to the growth that can happen in your safe, clean and cozy cocoon! Even though there are some kind of disgusting things going on in my journal... it keeps getting more and more pleasant aroma as different ingredients go into it. I also really enjoy how what you do with one page can literally spill over and effect other pages. I have been in this book every day since I got it, more than once a day. I will see something or think of something and say ooh I gotta grab the journal. Although I am working on the prompts in random order (or course) I found it helpful to skim through the "instructions" once through before I did anything else. It's really quite an experience and hopefully you learn things here that can open you up creatively or just breaking any perfectionist tendencies you may suffer. This is either the best or worst thing for OCD-types!!! Maybe the best and worst thing! Like I said, I think there is something to be found in this book/experience for absolutely anyone.

WARNINGS: This book may be seriously addictive to some users. It is likely to deter your attention from other things you "should" be doing and even make more work for you than the work that you are ignorning while do just a little more wrecking. You will make a mess of this book. You will make a mess of yourself, your home, your clothes, etc. etc. If people do not already consider you crazy, they will after they see you working on the wreckage mission. Possible reactions include acting out of normal character, experiencing delight and pride, needing to wash your hands every time you touch the journal, rash and unpredictable actions and results. You could also become dizzy if you breathe too heavy with the glue and any chemical substances used in the wrecking of this book. You may be compelled to buy multiple copies of the book to share with family and friends. This book could actually change your life, I know it has mine. You may see things different in the world and notice art possibilities and inspiration all around you.

In conclusion... The paper does not taste good. You may find a blowdryer handy, on either the hot or cool settings. If you cannot figure out where to begin, I highly recommend the coffee page and or cracking the spine. Both very helpful for those used to taking good care of books. I would love to share some pics of my journal however, it's presently tied up in the bathroom sink. Perhaps another time!

I never even realized I was creative until this book came around. I absolutely love the idea of being able to do WHATEVER you want with this book. This book will save your life, it decreases anxiety and increased my excitement about life. If you are debating purchase please don't anymore!! It's 10$ at first but turns into a priceless item!

I purchased the red version of this for myself and the black version for my husband and we have a BLAST. If you are looking for something to do alone to entertain yourself once in a while or with a friend or loved one - look no further. You won't get this quirky, weird, different, awesome kind of entertainment anywhere else. Want a place where you can collect stickers, write out four-letter words, spit your coffee, take a book for a walk and so much more? Look no further!

About the Author

Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, went to Cleveland, Ohio, lived for a number of years in Chicago, and long resided in New York City's Harlem. He graduated from Lincoln University in 1929 and was awarded an honorary Litt. D. in 1943. He was perhaps best known as a poet and the creator of Simple, but he also wrote novels, biography, history, plays (several of them Broadway hits), and children's books, and he edited several anthologies. Mr. Hughes died in 1967.

Arnold Rampersad, author of the widely acclaimed biography The Life of Langston Hughes, is Woodrow Wilson Professor of Literature and director of American Studies at Princeton University.

I read this book as a restless twenty something, with a lifelong case of wanderlust. As a 46 year old, I still have it, and I'm rediscovering this beautiful autobiography of a fellow soul.

Mr. Hughes brings a zen like quality to his stories regarding his life and what he was forced to endure. He persevered, triumphed and soared. If you want to feel at peace with yourself this is a book to help you get there. Mr. Hughes is a role model that we should be glad we have. a gracious kind compassionate human. imho ;>)

As the sequel to "The Big Sea", Mr.Hughes again speaks the language of a poet so well that he makes the reading of his life seem like a first-person experience. After his travels on several ships and the taste of his first successes(and failures), he simply explores and writes: of Paris, Russia, and Cuba, and shares his experiences with the reader. His writing is so rich and vivid that he makes every location in the world seem like poetry in motion. This book and "The Big Sea" should definitely be on reading lists everywhere-or, if you have a friend or relative who feels like they're a "wandering spirit", these books would make great gifts. Mr.Hughes touches on everything human: from the strained relationship with his father to the blatant racism he encounters everyday; to the women he becomes fond of and his neverending thirst for experience and knowledge; to the countless sights of wonder in the world that one never sees when they are ignorant. Beautiful writing by a true poet.
