I adopted this text for several reasons: It seems to be most strategic of the strategic HR textbooks, in that it requires students to synthesize across different readings and draw some conclusions from various points of view. Second, I chose this book for my executive students because their usual preference for writing and reading is concise, to the point. The reading structure of this book creates almost an "executive summary" feel, but it is reasonably complete and cohesive throughout. Third, my HR colleague on our faculty has used this book for several years, and there are advantages to both of us using the same book. In the past I used Baron and Krep's book, but my students absolutely hated it. They seem to like this book fairly well. The chapters are concise and to the point, which is great, especially for my executive students. The organization is easy to follow, and the readings have been picked out that coincide nicely with the topics at hand.

I liked the mix of theory, readings and cases. I was looking for a text that provided access to current writings and thought on SHRM. This was the only text I found that had this more creative approach.

Higher-quality writing and research-based chapters.

The text was adopted largely for the reproduced articles/readings. It was great to have several seminal articles in one book.

About the Author
Jeffrey A. Mello is Dean of the School of Business and Professor of Business Law and Management at Siena College. . He previously held faculty and administrative positions at Barry University, Towson University, the George Washington University, the University of California at Berkeley, Golden Date University and Northeastern University, from where he received his Ph.D. He has been a recipient of the David L. Bradford Outstanding Educator Award, presented by the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society, and has received international, national, and institutional awards for his research, teaching, and service. He has authored five books and published more than one hundred book chapters, journal articles, and conference papers in journals such as the JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, BUSINESS HORIZONS, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, BUSINESS & SOCIETY REVIEW, JOURNAL OF EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION LAW, SETON HALL LEGISLATIVE JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF INDIVIDUAL EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS, PUBLIC PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT, EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS JOURNAL, LABOR LAW JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF LAW AND BUSINESS, and the JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT EDUCATION. Strategic Human Resource Management

The book covered a lot of ground. I believe it offered a lot of insight into the world of human resources, primarily, the challenges faced by HR today. Some highlights were the concept of valuing human assets, the implications of globalization, federal regulations, the importance of well-designed and applicable feedback systems, employee separation and compensation. Overall, it was a fairly easy read. I would recommend this book to professors, students, and entrepreneurs.

Finally, an HR Text that Focuses on Strategy

This is a great textbook for the instructor that wants to focus on HR strategy. Practically the entire first half of the book deal with strategic issues. My only concern however is that it is woefully out of date - four years old - and some of the materials show it! I have used this text for several years in graduate classes that I teach.

The second section examines some of the tools that can be used, and have been used, to prevent the escalation of dynamics towards the commission of atrocity crimes (tools such as sanctions, mediation, international criminal justice, and the use of military means), as well as the operational challenges that tend to obstruct global efforts to prevent such crimes. The third and final section draws lessons from actual cases of preventive action, both historical and recent, about the relative success of particular tools and approaches.

As the first edited collection of its kind, devoted exclusively to the preventive dimension of R2P, The Responsibility to Prevent intends to inform and shape the growing debate on how to approach atrocity crime prevention and how to build the capacities needed to implement the imperatives at the heart of R2P.

About the Author

Dr Serena Sharma is a Lecturer in the Defence Studies Department at King's College. Prior to joining King's Serena was based at the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict (ELAC) in Oxford University's Department of International Relations. She also held a Lectureship in International Relations at the Queen's College and a Research Fellowship at Wolfson College, Oxford. In 2010 Serena was appointed as the United Nations Association (UK) Special Advisor on the Responsibility to Protect. She holds a PhD in International Relations and a Masters in Human Rights from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She has served as an editor and associate editor of Millennium: Journal of International Studies. Prior to commencing her graduate studies, Serena worked with the former Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lloyd Axworthy.

Jennifer Welsh is Professor and Chair in International Relations at the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and a Senior Research Fellow at Somerville College, Oxford. She is co-director of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict. In July 2013, Professor Welsh was named by UN Secretary Ban ki-moon as his Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect. Professor Welsh is the author and editor of several books and articles on the responsibility to protect, humanitarian intervention, the UN Security Council, and the principle of sovereignty. She sits on the editorial boards of the journals Ethics and International Affairs and Global Responsibility to Protect, and the Cambridge University Press series in International Relations. From 2014, she will be directing a 5-year research project, funded by the European Research Council, on the 'individualization of war'.

About the Author

Jussi M. Hanhimaki is Professor of International History and Politics at the Graduate Institute of International Studies (GIIS), Geneva. He is author/co-author of five books and won the 2002 Bernath Prize from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.

Benedikt Schoenborn is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Tampere, Finland, and a former Fellow of the Norwegian Nobel Institute. He is the author of various articles on Western Europe in the Cold War and of the prize-winning book La m�sentente apprivois�e: de Gaulle et les Allemands (2007).

Barbara Zanchetta�is a Researcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs in Helsinki, focusing on US foreign policy, transatlantic relations and 'out of area' issues. She is completing a book titled From Dominance to Leadership: The Transformation of American Power in the 1970s.

A much-needed comprehensive study of regional integration.

Mattli provides a thorough and careful study of regional integration in which he takes all previous theories, analyses them and synthesizes them into his own 'demand and supply' theory. If many questions about the current 'integrationist' trend were left unanswered, or poorly explained, by previous theories, both in economics and political-science; Mattli does a splendid job at explaining integration and its modus operandi. By looking at why many attempts at integration have failed and very few succeeded, and by looking at why and when 'outsider' countries attempt to become 'insiders', Mattli develops his demand-and-supply-side-conditions analysis of regional integration. His specialist knowledge of the current European integration (and previous historical attempts) is showcased in Chapter 4. This book provides a new, rich and logical framework for further studies on regional integration.

Convincent interpretation of regionalism

The book of Mattli is a very convincent work in regional integration studies. His arguments is not based in a (traditional)economic approach where integration is viewed only for eliminating borders barriers.

Inside political science Mattli think in terms of the role of the regional leader, the external forces of economics and demands for regional rules as the driving forces of regionalism.

Chapter 2 and 3 are the best parts of the book, and i use these chapters in my courses of regional integration, in international relations area.
