About the Author

Spencer A. Rathus received his PhD from the University at Albany. He is on the faculty at The College of New Jersey. His areas of interest include psychological assessment, cognitive behavior therapy, and deviant behavior. He is the originator of the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule, which has become a Citation Classic. He has authored several books, including Psychology: concepts and Connections; PSYCH, HDEV, CDEV, Essentials of Psychology, and Childhood and Adolescence: Voyages in Development. He co-authored Making the Most of College with Lois Fichner-Rathus; AIDS: What Every Student Needs To Know with Susan Boughn; and Behavior Therapy, Psychology and the Challenges of Life, Your Health and Health in the New Millennium with Jeffrey S. Nevid. His professional activities include service on the American Psychological Association Task Force on Diversity Issues at the Precollege and Undergraduate Levels of Education in Psychology, and on the Advisory Panel, American Psychological Association, Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) Task Force on Undergraduate Psychology Major Competencies.

Jeffrey S. Nevid is Professor of Psychology at St. John's University in New York, where he directs the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervises doctoral students in clinical practicum work. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University at Albany and was a staff psychologist at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, New York. He later completed a National Institute of Mental Health Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Mental Health Evaluation Research at Northwestern University. He holds a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology, is a Fellow of the Academy of Clinical Psychology, and has served on the editorial boards of several journals and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. His publications have appeared his in such journals as Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Health Psychology, Journal of Occupational Medicine, Behavior Therapy, American Journal of Community Psychology, Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, Journal of Clinical Psychology, Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Teaching of Psychology, American Journal of Health Promotion , and Psychology and Psychotherapy.

Dr. Nevid is also author of the book, Choices: Sex in the Age of STDs and the introductory psychology text, Psychology: Concepts and Applications, as well as several other college texts in the fields of psychology and health that he coauthored with Spencer A. Rathus. Dr. Nevid has also been involved in conducting a program of pedagogical research focusing on helping students become more effective learners.

Lois Fichner-Rathus is Professor of Art in the Art Department of The College of New Jersey, where she has also chaired the Program in Gender Studies. She holds a combined undergraduate degree in fine arts and art history, an M.A. from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, and a Ph.D. in the History, Theory, and Criticism of Art from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her areas of specialization include feminist art history and criticism, contemporary art, and modern art and architecture. She has authored several textbooks, including Understanding Art and Foundations of Art and Design. She has also published articles in professional journals and exhibited her large-format photographic prints.

To learn to listen

This book contains the text of the six Charles Eliot Norton lectures that Copland gave at Harvard. Copland thinks about Music and its meaning. He speaks about the creation and appreciation of Music as activities of the Imagination. He rails against the fuddy- duddy music scene in which all over the world a very limited repertoire of classic works holds the stage. He talks about the special affinities composers have for different types of instruments. He argues for a greater openness to new Music. He distinguishes between the capacity of the ordinary listenerer and the professional musician in terms of their ability to anticipate what is next in the score.

He teaches throughout the meaning of being a listener and lover of Music.

It's not written to be a concise analysis of any certain subject, but a series of lectures that could be enjoyed at the same time that they were informative.

This book provides great insight into the mind of our great American composer. He speaks on a wide range of subjects, but seems to cycle around the American classical music and it's development. He brings to mind the processes that go along with composing and creating music, and his respect and appreciation for other composers makes this a positive, uplifting but informative and thought-provoking book.

short but profound

Of all the books out there about music, page for page this is one of the best. It's a composer's perspective on why music gets composed, and HOW it gets composed. Copland takes you into the thought processes of musical creation. If you've ever been tempted to subscribe to the idea that music is a universal language, Copland undercuts that idea by exploring the theme of music as NONVERBAL SYMBOLS in a SYSTEM of inherited sounds. The second half of the book is dated, because he's addressing issues that were contemporary in the 1950s. But the first half is well worth reading.

I bought this book, along with two others, after some careful research into real estate investing books on Amazon (customer ratings, reviews, etc.). These were part of a Christmas present several years ago to my younger brother who is working hard - very hard, actually - to break into the real estate investment world. I wanted to report back that he found this book informative and insighful and still refers to them today from time to time. I had been over at his house this weekend, and he actually mentioned the presents, and told me that he actually found some useful info in this book, and that it wasn't just another get-rich-quick or uninformed hack job, both of which are so prevalent in real estate literature (and have been for years, as you probably know). So, I can say that I definitely recommend this book to anyone - especially someone starting out in the field of real estate investment properties.

A wise investment if you are a real, real estate investor

I bought this book a number of years ago. I already owned five houses and some small multi-family properties. This book opened my eyes to a new understanding of income stream valuation. With individual homes and small multi-family units, your capital appreciation is limited by the comparable properties in the area. Having a higher rent doesn't make any real difference. With larger multi-family properties you can increase the value substantially by finding a poorly run property and managing it better. This may involve renovation or it may simply be a matter of understanding and achieving market rents.
After buying this book I bought a 6 unit property, a 21 unit property, a 22 unit property and now have a 44 unit under contract which will take my portfolio over 100 units. I'm refinancing my 21 and 22 unit properties and pulling out enough equity that I'll be able to buy the 44 unit without any cash out of pocket.
Steve's spreadsheet product has been very helpful in evaluating properties for a number of different variables many of which are also used by lenders which allows you to talk the same language when you seek financing. The reason I gave the book 4 stars as opposed to 5 is that the time frames he suggests based on a 20% increase in value just aren't typical due to the costs of buying and selling. You need more like a 35-40% increase to trade up. That said, the theory works, it just takes longer.

Used the techniques provided to purchase a commercial office building and a 48-unit apartment complex, and refer to it often. I have recommended it to numerous real estate clients who have also purchased copies. (Never lend it out, because I know I would have to get a new copy!)

Reader Beware!

Interesting! I am not a big fan of self help books but this one caught my eye. Fortunate for me it was an easy read and tapped into a lot of relevant 'stuff'. It opened my eyes (and yes! my mind) to how attachments from a primary caregiver during childhood can greatly impact adult behaviors (no blaming - Mom did all she could with 4 kids!). The greatest value for me came from identifying my emotional 'triggers' and how substantially they impact my current communication and view of myself! Fortunately for me Dr. Shirley does not dwell on the past, explains it is never too late and shows you how you CAN change!

Caution! Reading this book will help your relationship but identifying your own role (OK faults) in communicating with your significant other may increase your responsibility for helping the relationship evolve. Trust me! It is well worth the effort (and the read!). Now if I can just get my partner to read the book...

Looking Underneath the Psychological Hood

Ever catch yourself getting in your own way? Perhaps you are upset that you are not so successful yet youy have been offered several promotion only to turn them down. You find yourself afraid of more responsibility and are deathly afraid of making a mistake that will mess everything up. Perhaps your track record in relationships ain't all to terrific. Getting too close scares you and sometimes the relationships are not close enough that you wonder if your partner really cares about you.

What does it all boil down to. THe author here likes to link it to the parenting styles that our parents rasised us up with. There are healthy styyles where our primary caregiver which is usually the mother is always there and pays proper attention to us. They validate our feeling and if they make a mistake they fix and properly apologize for it, something called repair. Ambivalent parents are kind of flakey and unreliable. Sometimes they are their and sometimes they are not. THis produces someone who is very needy and attention seeking. Everything also worries them. THese sorts need lots of validation. The last type is the parent who is not there. THe child raised in this get a sense of false independence and unreal detachment. Sometimes they do not like it if you cozy up to them too much.

Perhaps the part I found most interesting was the part about the brain functions. The amydala is the fear detector or threat detector. The Hippocampus is our memory recorder and when things are stressfull or frightening it does not record all that accurately. OUr sympathetic nervous system gears us up for flight or fight responses.The parasympathetic gets us calmed down. Events in our life cause these diferent brain centers to work differently. If there is a lot featr our amygdala gets over sized if everything is calm and cool then our brain develops normally.

When people have a messed up background and they find their life is a mess they tend to use a variety of defenses to cover up the problem. Such defenses could include rationalization,sublimation, displacement and a host of others.

The first trick is tyo be aware of our triggers and emotions. Another trick is to go back to that old memory and change the outcome. This makes it less threatening. In addition to awareness there is grounding and staying in the moment.

I do not normally like psychology or self help books and I normally do not like books that point everythig back to the parents. Yet I have found that this books gives lots of insight into the hyuman psyche and that there is lots of useful info here to help overcome your issues.

One of the Better "Self Help" Books I've Read

Overall, one of the better "self-help" books I've read over the years. I would definitely recommend it.

WHAT I LIKE:

The author does not preach or talk down to you.

The book is very well organized (bold headlines, clear font, work space)

The author presents a compelling argument on why we do the things we do - and how to break unhealthy patterns.

CAUTION:

You have to read the book with an open mind - and be willing to do a lot of self-reflection.

Set aside a certain amount of time to read the book each day and write down your thoughts (find a quiet place). The chapters build on each other and a bigger picture is revealed with each one.

Don't expect that after you finish reading this book, your troubles will be over. But, with the awareness this book will bring you, and the tools it provides, you should find yourself on a healthier course.
