From the Author
This book is all about learning by doing. You'll get instructions showing exactly how to build over a dozen rockets, launchers and trackers. Along the way, you will need some parts. As you buy the book, here are a few things to consider:

Most of the solid-propellent rockets in the book can be build from parts in the Estes Designer Special. Amazon has a good price on this collection of parts. You can also buy individual parts from various model rocket suppliers.
There are a few parts you will need for some of the later rockets that are not in the Estes Designer Special. You may want to wait to browse through the book before getting them, but if you're anxious to get started, hunt down the following parts. If you aren't sure what they are, wait a bit. The book will fill you in.
1. One or two BT-60 to BT-70 balsa transitions. (One each for the egg lofter and a general purpose payload bay.)
2. One or two BT-70 balsa nose cones. (One each for the egg lofter and a general purpose payload bay.)
3. A BT-60 to BT-80 balsa transition and a BT-80 balsa nose cone for the camera payload.
4. A small camera such as the Y-2000.
5. Two extra BT-60 body tubes for payload boosters, a BT-70 body tube for the egg lofter and general purpose payload bay, and a BT-80 for the camera payload.
6. Two extra BT-20 nose cones. I used blunt balsa ones for the glider and helicopter recovery rocket, but you can substitute.
For the launcher, you will need a keyless drill chuck and a 1/2-20 thread and a 3" long 1/2-20 bolt, as well as a 12 volt cigarette lighter plug and socket for the 12 volt external power connection. (You can build the launchers without these parts, or even retro fit them later.)
Most of these parts are available right here on Amazon. You might as well get that free shipping! All other parts are usually easy to find locally.
One member of the local rocket club decided I wrote this book to have an excuse to build a lot of rockets, launchers and trackers. I asked him not to spill my secrets to my wife. I hope you'll keep it quiet too, and that you have as much fun building them as I did!

He sold his car to get the money needed to buy an Apple II computer and started writing assemblers and compilers.

He has developed numerous compilers and interpreters, including APW, which Apple Computer shipped to developers for the Apple IIGS. He has worked on plasma physics simulations for Z-pinch machines, disease surveillance programs credited with saving lives of hurricane Katrina refugees, and advanced military simulations that protect our nations most critical assets.

Mike currently runs the Byte Works, an independent software publishing and consulting firm specializing in scientific and technical programming, Bluetooth LE technology, iOS development and cross-platform Java development. Captivating and Comprehensive - A Must Have for (Model) Rocket Scientists of All Ages
By Kevin Ryan
If you have even the slightest interest in rockets, this book will be for you. It is big and contains the gamut of information, from novice to expert, for building, launching and recovering rockets. It covers launch site setup, protocol and safety, rocket building, launch controller design and build plans and even tracking systems for when your rocket is in the air. Chapters on theory delve into the math & physics behind rocket design to ensure safe launches whether you are designing a high-flying speedster or a heavy lifter for competition or just experimenting.

The book is fun to read, it is sprinkled with humor and can be read cover to cover or treated as a reference manual where you pick and choose the chapters of interest. Skip the theory chapters if math is not your thing, and move right into building and flying.

The book covers air rockets, water rockets and solid-fuel rockets and the launch mechanisms for each. Many good resolution photographs accompany the text for illustration. Build projects come with plans and 'shopping lists' of required parts.

The chapters are:
Chapter 1 Let’s Fly Some Rockets!
Chapter 2 Model Rocketry Today
Chapter 3 Juno: A Solid Propellant Rocket
Chapter 4 Launch Pads
Chapter 5 Flight Operations
Chapter 6 Compressed Air Rockets
Chapter 7 Rocket Stability
Chapter 8 How High Did It Go?
Chapter 9 Payloads
Chapter 10 Selecting Parachutes and Streamers
Chapter 11 Water Rockets
Chapter 12 Parachute Recovery of a Water Rocket
Chapter 13 Subsonic Aerodynamics
Chapter 14 How High Will It Go?
Chapter 15 Minimum-Diameter Rockets
Chapter 16 Mini Rockets
Chapter 17 Multistage Rockets
Chapter 18 Cluster Rockets
Chapter 19 Helicopter Recovery
Chapter 20 Rocket and Boost Gliders
Chapter 21 Air Rocket Glider
Chapter 22 Rocket Clubs and Contests
Chapter 23 Onward and Upward
Appendix Programs from the Book
Appendix Places to Buy Stuff or Find Information

Great book for budding rocketeers
By Scientia est Deus
Concentrating predominantly on "Low Power Rockets" which are the majority of the those you see in hobby and craft stores, usually from Estes Rockets, this book explains and illustrates in considerable detail how rockets and their motors work and how to properly build and safely launch them. If I had to chose one book for the rocketry novice or the rocket kit builder wanting to know more about how and why rockets and their motors work and how to design and build their own models from scratch, it would be this book. It provides the detailed instructions needed to "scratch build" from parts a number of very attractive rocket designs with various features and characteristics, provides detailed instructions on how to make from inexpensive and readily available hardware store parts your own launch pad of a very clever design, and shows how to build a simple electronic launch controller from Radio Shack parts. It also covers the design of and altitude prediction for rockets using computer simulators like Rocksim and Openrocket, has two chapters about water rockets and a sophisticated water rocket electronic parachute release mechanism, and has a short chapter illustrating the assembly of a small, commercially available reloadable motor system. The book is well worth the price, especially the discounted Amazon price which is considerably less than the US$44.99 retail price printed on the book's back cover.

Highly Recommended - this book is a keeper!
By J. Finley
This book is great! It is so very accessible and easy to follow, and what I think makes it a keeper is that it has a wide range of topics. There are projects and concepts for everyone - from beginners to experienced rocketeers. On top of that, it is accommodating to different learning styles. If you are looking to learn why and how rockets work, you will enjoy reading the very clear explanations of the physical concepts behind them. If you are the more hands on type, you can get right down to the business of building and seeing the action. I look forward to sharing this book with my kids and picking out projects and lessons to do together - both for fun times and as homeschooling projects. It's definitely a book that I will be dipping into over and over again throughout the years.
