From her teenage years, V�ronique Van Acker-Beittel, born and raised in East-Flanders, Belgium, has had a passion for her country’s traditional spirit, genever. After college, V�ronique relocated to the U.S. in 2002, starting a career in Trade and Marketing with Fortune 500 companies. Unable to find her beloved spirit in the U.S., V�ronique quit her job in 2010 to found Flemish Lion LLC, America’s first importing company of Belgian genever. V�ronique lives in Vermont with her husband Matthew, where they enjoy the simple things in life while drinking genever, one sip at the time.

Interesting History

This is a fascinating glimpse into a spirit little known in the United States. What happened to the Genever industry during and after WWII was unknown to me, but its survival is part of this interesting story. And now having tried Genever, I'm glad it survived and is here in the US.

Everything You Want to Know about Genever

I discovered Genever several years back on a trip to Gent and a visit to the amazing Genever bar 't Dreupelkot. Since then I've had many questions about the history of this fantastic drink. V�ronique Van Acker's book answered all my questions as well as some I never thought to ask.

THE Book on Genever for English Speakers

While there are a number of books on Genever ( all the different type,Belgian,Dutch etc., ) available in their native languages and a few others, this is the first book in English we have run across on this increasingly important subject for people who take their drinks seriously.
Genever in general and Belgian Genever in particular are largely unknown in America and extremely hard to find. Even harder to find is any written material on them and what they are about or what to do with them once you finally get your hands on a bottle.
This book is a lovely, well written, history and explanation of Genever in general with an emphasis on Belgian Genever both as a spirit and also the broader social history it has in Belgian society.Overall it makes for a fascinating read, describing the origins of the various types and subtypes of genever,it's ingredients, production, distillation, consumption ( with a recipe section also) and it's social history. One of the more fascinating revelations is about the setbacks and long prohibitions that beset the industry and how these same prohibitions gave birth to the flowering of the Belgian beer industry.
Full of history, facts and descriptions, the book at the same time is still immensely readable and entertaining. It is almost like the author is telling you the story rather than a dry recitation of facts, It is a long overdue reference for this much over looked and under appreciated spirit.
